Atlanta Cuisine discussion forums to be shut down

July 20th, 2009 by Besha Rodell in Food media, News

Tom Maicon, the founder of Atlanta Cuisine, has put up a post today announcing that the discussion forums on that site will be shut down at the end of this month.

Atlanta Cuisine has long been a virtual gathering spot for Atlanta foodies. When I first arrived in town I relied heavily on its posters to let me know what I should be checking out. I have many of the posters there to thank for directling me to many of the great meals I’ve had in Atlanta.

Atlanta Cuisine, I will miss you. Never thought it would come to an end. At least we have you Mr. Bostock – don’t you dare leave us

Anybody know of an another forum we could move to? I’m really going to miss AC

  4. What's Cooking? Says:

the only people regularly posting there for a long, long time are the core “30″ (give or take) who have always viewed it more as a social networking forum than a restaurant review board

these people rarely ate out and spent most of their time in a “secret” forum where they would lament their lives woes and PUI (post under the influence!!!!).

They also liked to exchange cooking recipes and post pictures of their meals. In fact, the most popular thread on the entire board is (was?) the “What’s cooking?” thread.

It is therefore not surprising that TM feels like things need to go in a new direction.

Once the economy went into the shitter and people stopped eating out, all that was left (for all intents and purposes) was the core 30. Ironically, this core contributed the most in terms of posts but relatively little in terms of actual restaurant reviews.

So be it. Best of luck to Mr. Maicon and, whatever happens, I hope it works out for all concerned.

  5. i'll miss you AC Says:

Well, i’ve moved from atlanta. When i was there, i heavily relied on the AC forums to find the rare, hole in the wall restos that became the stars of this city. Tasty china, delicious kebab, chef liu’s, panahar, rancherita gordita, etc.

I really hope that there will be another forum soon, because I wouldn’t be up to date on my atl restos once i move back. I dont know how many times I’ve discovered a new awesome resto bc i’ve seen the name of the resto on a thread somewhere on the forum. Probably saved hundreds of dollars worth of gas and food costs…

I really appreciate all the work TM has put into the forum. Hope everything will work out in the end.

    In response to What’s Cooking:

Secret forum? You must mean the Junkyard, which was open to anyone who asked. Hasn’t been really active for quite some time. The PUI thread has a thick layer of dust on it.

Yes, the What’s Cooking? thread was probably the biggest individual thread, but the Atlanta Restaurant section is by far the largest and most active section.

I believe the ‘core 30′, as you put it (yes, I am one of those 30) eat out quite often.

Your characterizations of the AC discussion forum and its members are off target.

I also contributed at times to the restaurant forum on AC. I had no idea that I was one of the 30… I agree with Robin here. I suspect that many people liked that forum and used it, like myself, to learn about the restaurant scene in ATL. It was a great resource, and I will miss it.

What’s cookin’ has some points. It was like radio in the 1980s when PDs told their talk show hosts to have psychics on their show because the phone lines lit up anytime they were on.

They quickly found out the only people who listened were the 40 people jamming up the phone lines.

The restaurant forum was not perfect, but at least there was some give and take. There was not that disingenuous “Breathtaking MandyGirl” robotic backslapping every time somebody posted a review.

Perhaps Mister Macon will bring back the restaurant forum and eliminate the hokey pokey apple polishing sections.
