Sprig is affordable and delicious

It’s always a pleasant surprise to chance upon a neighborhood restaurant that turns out to be significantly above average. That was my experience with Sprig Restaurant and Bar (2860 Lavista Rd., 404-248-9700) in Decatur-Oak Grove. I dropped by for an early dinner Sunday.

The restaurant is at the opposite end of Vista Grove Shopping Center, which includes the new Napoleon’s. Sprig, which I wrongly presumed was vegetarian, offers a substantial menu of small plates and entrees made with primarily local ingredients whose sources are listed on the back of the menu.

I ordered a not-so-small plate of fried chicken livers with salad greens, toast and apple compote followed by slices of duck breast with braised cabbage and poached crab apples. Dessert was two shortcakes layered with cooked apples, buttermilk creme anglaise and caramel. Every bite of every (affordable) dish was delicious.

The restaurant is owned by Daniel Morrison, who is also the bar chef. Robert Elliot is the executive chef.

Sprig just opened a few days before my visit. For now, it’s got some abbreviated hours: 4-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, 12-8 p.m. Sunday; closed Monday and Tuesday.

Seriously, this restaurant was a total surprise. Check out its Facebook page; its website is still under development.
