Help! My Estro-Profi espresso maker has given up the ghost after 12 years, and I’m in the market for something new. Honestly, I do not want to spend $500-plus dollars again.
Does anyone have a recommendation (besides a moka or AeroPress).

If you haven’t already, take a look at the reviews over at CoffeeGeek.com

I’ve only used a moka pot and a Nespresso machine (uses proprietary Nespresso pods) and those types of espresso makers are definitely quick and easy espresso. Unfortunately, they lack some of the subtleties that one gets from a proper machine.

While about $600, the Racilio Silvia is a workhorse and will probably last you a decade with no maintenance. I’ve had mine for about 7 years the couple who recommended it to me have had it 2 years longer than that. No frills, no problems. If you buy a cheap espresso maker you probably won’t end up saving money in the long run.

Amortized over 12 years, I think you got a bargain with your first machine. Once you consider all the money you are saving by boycotting Whole Foods, it will be easy to justify the indulgence.

JC: I’ve heard great things about that machine from friends, so I’m lookin at it.
Jim: Did I say I was participating in the boycott of Whole Foods?
