Love at the Pub tells the story of the Brick Store
I am so glad Rocktober is over, because that means that it is Novembeer. Although I don’t expect Gov. Purdue to declare it officially, I am herewith designating this as the unofficial silly pun name for this month. Novembeer is when we all get together with our loved ones and give thanks for beer. It is also that time of the year when the breweries release their winter seasonals and holiday beers. It is a good month.
There is a lot to look forward to this Novembeer if you are a beer lover, including a new Taco Mac, the release of Love at the Pub, the story of the Brick Store Pub, a host of beer dinners and tastings, and a slew of new beer releases, both local and from beyond Georgia. Here are a few of the highlights of just the next two weeks!
Taco Mac Prado (Now!) - The newest location of this chain of mega-tap rooms opens just inside the Perimeter on Roswell Road, in the same complex as the original 5 Seasons. Finally, a new reason to go to Sandy Springs. The store is open now, and will be pouring a cask-conditioned keg of Rogue Mocha Porter on its beer engine, along with some other special treats among its 140 taps.
Terrapin Hopsecutioner Sneak Preview (Fri., Nov. 6) - Taco Mac Metropolis in Midtown will be tapping a cask of Terrapin Beer Company’s new year-round offering, Hopsecutioner IPA. Brewed with 6 different hops totaling 78 IBU and with an ABV of 7.2%, Hopsecutioner promises to drop a mighty ax on Atlanta hopheads.
Merchant du Vin Beer Dinner (Tues., Nov. 10) – Taco Mac in Duluth will host this dinner featuring beers from the importer of such vaunted brands as Ayinger, Samuel Smith’s, and Lindemans, all of which will be featured with the 5-course menu. This one looks to be quite special and is a pretty good deal at $50. You can eat 3 times at this one for the price of certain beer dinners in town. The menu and pairings can be viewed and reservations made here.
He’Brew Jewbelation Vertical Tasting (Tues., Nov. 10) - Shmaltz Brewing Company’s Jewbelation anniversary ales are among its best offerings, with each one upping the ante on ingredients and ABV on the year before. The Brick Store Pub will have all six versions of this special release for side-by-side comparison, starting with Jewbelation 8 and culminating with this year’s just released 13th anniverary Bar Mitzvah ale, with 13 malts, 13 hops, and 13% ABV. A special meat and cheese plate will also be available. You’ll not see an opportunity like this again anytime soon.
Love at the Pub Book Release (Wed., Nov. 11) - Mary Jane Mahan, one of the first employees of the Brick Store Pub, has written an intimate look the people, events and beer that have made the Brick Store Pub the best beer bar in America and the pride of Decatur, Georgia. Mahan’s labor of love finally sees publication this month and can be purchased at Amazon. To celebrate, Mahan will be conducting a web “telesudsinar,” a sort of online beer summit featuring Brick Store founders Dave Blanchard and Mike Gallagher, Carol Stoudt of Stoudt’s Brewing Company, Rob Nelson of Merchant du Vin and Georgians for World Class Beer, Lynn Davis of Beer Connoisseur Magazine, and others. Get the details at the Love at the Pub website. A release party at the Brick Store will follow soon.
Beer vs. Wine Dinner at 5 Seasons Westside (Wed., Nov. 11) - Crawford Moran has challenged wine guru and Concentrics Restaurant Group co-owner Todd Rushing to a pairing showdown. David Larkworthy of 5 Seasons and Drew Van Luevan of One Midtown Kitchen will be cooking up a 5-course dinner using local fall produce. Moran and Rushing will select a beer and wine pairing for each course. The cost is $65. Call 404-875-3232 or email 5seasonswestside@gmail.com for details and to make reservations.
Just a Few of the New Beers in Stores - New Belgium La Folie (Flanders Red) and 2 Below (Winter Warmer), Stone Double Bastard (American Strong Ale/DIPA), Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve (American Amber/Red Ale) and Yellow Snow (IPA), Anchor Our Special Ale 2009 (Winter Warmer), and The Bruery Saison Rue (Saison), Orchard White (Witbier), and Autumn Maple (Belgian Strong Dark Ale). Look for reviews in the coming weeks.
