Omnivore - Grant Park Coffeehouse now open
A new cafe across from the park
In the past year, Octane’s owner Tony Riffle has hinted that he was looking to open a cafe in the strangely coffeehouse-free Grant Park. Instead, Riffle bought what was Method in Emory Village. When I’ve asked him about plans for Grant Park he says he’s still thinking about it, but won’t commit to a yes or no.
Well, it appears someone else has taken the bait and opened in Grant Park. Grant Park Coffeehouse opened Feb. 14 on the corner of Cherokee and Augusta avenues on the west side of Grant Park. I stopped in yesterday morning to check it out.
The space has a vaguely African theme, and the coffee is organic Ethiopian, roasted by Dean’s Beans. I had a decent cappuccino, a mild, tangy cup of regular coffee, and an above average blueberry scone (paging Cliff Bostock). The scone lacked some of that hard crumble outer crust that the very best scones achieve, but it wasn’t too sweet and most of the flavor present came from actual plump blueberries rather than overly-sweet dough.
It’s not Octane, but it is a nice addition to a caffeine-starved neighborhood.
