Talking Head: Novembeer!

Love at the Pub tells the story of the Brick Store

Love at the Pub tells the story of the Brick Store

I am so glad Rocktober is over, because that means that it is Novembeer. Although I don’t expect Gov. Purdue to declare it officially, I am herewith designating this as the unofficial silly pun name for this month. Novembeer is when we all get together with our loved ones and give thanks for beer. It is also that time of the year when the breweries release their winter seasonals and holiday beers. It is a good month.

There is a lot to look forward to this Novembeer if you are a beer lover, including a new Taco Mac, the release of Love at the Pub, the story of the Brick Store Pub, a host of beer dinners and tastings, and a slew of new beer releases, both local and from beyond Georgia. Here are a few of the highlights of just the next two weeks!

Food historian Andrew Smith to speak here

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Andrew Smith, the (amazingly prolific) author of Eating History, will be speaking 7:30-9:30 p.m. Mon., Nov. 16, at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts (1927 Lakeside Pkw., Tucker):

Food historian Andrew F. Smith will recount—in delicious detail—some of the major moments that made contemporary American cuisine, as described in his brand new book, Eating History: Turning Points in the Making of American Cuisine, from Columbia University Press. The style of American cooking, along with the ingredients that compose it, has never been fixed. With a cast of characters including bold inventors, savvy restaurateurs, ruthless advertisers, mad scientists, adventurous entrepreneurs, celebrity chefs, and relentless health nuts, Smith pins down the truly crackerjack history behind the way America eats.

The event is co-sponsored by the Culinary Historians of Atlanta, which maintains a Facebook page (e-mail deborah.duchon@gmail.com). There is also a separate Facebook page for this event.

Talking Head: Oktoberfest ist hier!

Thursday, October 1st, 2009
Oompa Loompas at the Brick Store Pub

Oompa Loompas at the Brick Store Pub

Hotoberfest, taking place in Glenwood Park in East Atlanta on Sat., Oct 3 from noon-7 p.m., promises “Earth. Beer. Music.” Which are three things I really like. Especially beer. No offense, Earth, but you just don’t taste as good with pizza. The event puts a new twist on the traditional beer tasting festival by having many of the vendors in a free ”World Market” area encircling the Glenwood Park pond, which will feature retail beer and food sales, artists, music on a solar-powered stage, and informational displays on sustainable and environmentally responsible products and services.

However, if beer is your focus, purchase a ticket to the Beer Tasting area for $30 in advance ($35 at the gate) and get unlimited sampling from almost 150 beers. Select your favorites and vote for the Best Brew, a people’s choice award presented to the top 3 picks. If you want to get really decadent, purchase a $50 ticket that will grant you access to the VIP tent where there will be over two dozen special beers, some brewed just for the occasion, such as an aged cask from Sweetwater, and special offerings from Twain’s, Atlanta Brewing Company, and Lagunitas. Oh yeah, and VIP bathrooms. Proceeds from Hotoberfest benefit Dialogue, Trees Atlanta, and Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. (more…)

Rathbun’s 2010 cooking classes

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Rathbun’s has just announced its 2010 cooking classes, which in past years has sold out in a few days. Here’s the press release:

In Rathbun’s interactive cooking classes, you are in the kitchen, working and preparing the food yourself. Four teams of four people create their dishes from scratch, and then return at the end of the day with their guest for a complete dinner with wine pairings. Each team actually prepares their own course and then sits down to dine on their own creations. For three hours, you prepare the ingredients and get ready to make the dish. You’re in the kitchen, not in the seat.

Sign up for the class by calling the restaurant at 404.524.8280. Cost is $350.00 per person. All classes include 1 person in the class, you and a guest for dinner, a complimentary Rathbun Logo Chef Jacket, and wine pairings. All classes take place at 112 Krog Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30307

Rathbun’s 2010 cooking class line up is as follows:

Sunday, January 17, 2010 – Mexico City – First class for Chef Kevin. Join us as we create dishes inspired from the heart of Mexico City such as mole’s, tamales, sopes and traditional ceviches. This class will surely sell out and will be recommended to your friends. Only 16 seats are available!

Sunday, March 14, 2010 – French – Back for another run, the first French class created dishes like foie gras, duck paillard, Scottish salmon quenelles, along with seared veal loin and morels. Then we paired classic French wines with the four courses and discovered that French food creates a great cooking class. Only 16 seats are available! (more…)

Talking Head: Fall releases and September events

The Oktoberfest beers are arriving at a rapid pace, so its time to get warmed up on some strong, malty lagers, even if the warm weather does linger a bit longer in Georgia than it does in Germany. Yeah, but what drugs are they serving?

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This, from Meryl Arnett at Rosebud, sounds like fun, although the idea of 160 people in tie-dye is kinda frightening.

Rosebud (formerly Food 101 Morningside) is once again bringing together delicious food and great music, two things Chef and Owner Ron Eyester feels very passionate about, with the third annual Jerry Garcia Tribute Dinner.  Due to its tremendous popularity, Rosebud is hosting a two-night run on both August 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. to accommodate the demand.  The restaurant will only be seating reservations for the tribute dinner on these two nights.

The dinner was first held in 2006 and brought in more than 160 people to the restaurant (maximum capacity).   The success of this dinner encouraged Chef Ron to continue finding ways to combine his two passions with additional tribute dinners for artists, such as Johnny Cash and James Brown.  Each dinner takes a relaxed approach to pairing food with music.  “I try to be playful about the food.  I think some people take it all too seriously.  Now, I take the ingredients seriously, but it’s got to be fun” says Ron.

This year’s five-course pre-fixe menu will feature a selection of dishes inspired by the lyrics of Chef Ron’s favorite Grateful Dead songs.  Each dish will focus on utilizing fresh, local foods to compliment Garcia’s creative tunes.  The dinner will also continue its tradition of offering live music during and after the meal.  This year, however, Chef Ron is taking his local mantra a step further by featuring two bands local to the Morningside community.  Webster Humpage is playing on August 5 and Parker Smith on August 6.

Guests are encouraged to dress for the show in their best tie-dye; Birkenstocks are optional.  Although a different band plays each night, the same menu will be offered on both August 5 and 6.  Showtime is at 7 p.m.  The five course menu is $49 per person plus tax and gratuity (alcohol not included).  This dinner has sold out each year so reservations are required and can be made by calling 404-347-9747.

Greenpeace protest at Trader Joe’s

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Greenpeace volunteers go all-out for sustainability at an event earlier this month in San Francisco.

ROUGHY RIOT: Greenpeace volunteers go all out for sustainability at a "Traitor Joe's" event earlier this month in San Francisco.

Greenpeace volunteers from the Atlanta area gathered at Trader Joe’s in Midtown this morning to petition the store to stop selling unsustainable seafood. The activist group collected signatures as part of a push to encourage the national supermarket chain to make changes to its seafood policies. Greenpeace recently released a scorecard ranking the 20 most prominent grocery chains on their commitment to selling sustainable seafood. Trader Joe’s was ranked 17th.

In response, Greenpeace has launched an initiative known as “Traitor Joe’s” to pressure the store to stop selling exploited species.

The group originally planned to wear “brightly colored” orange roughy fish costumes to the event, according to a press release from last week. Orange roughy is a species that is both overfished and collected using methods that destruct marine habitats. The group wore the costumes at an event in San Francisco earlier this month.

However, “We had logistical problems with the orange roughy costumes,” said Greenpeace Climate Rescue Field Organizer Sierra Barnes.

“But we’ll be there with petitions,” she said.

“Nationally, we are using these petitions, and they have started to respond,” she said. But Trader Joe’s has “not responded to the full extent we would like them to.”

Greenpeace left the property this morning after the Midtown Trader Joe’s managers said they were calling the police.

Talking Head: Festivus in July

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Have you ever wondered why cultures in hot climates load their cuisine with sweat-inducing spices? Scientists offer a number of plausible explanations, including the antimicrobial properties of peppers, the cooling effects of perspiration, and the stimulant qualities that counter heat-induced lethargy and loss of appetite.

It’s likely a combination of these things, but I think there’s a more visceral impulse involved, as well. It’s the same reason people jump into frozen lakes and pretend to be polar bears. Because doing the logical thing is boring. Sometimes you have to change up the game. So if those watery summer beers just aren’t doing it for you anymore, why not just do a 180? Which bring us to Festivus in July. Both Taco Mac and The Porter Beer Bar are celebrating the dead center of summer with big, malty winter beers. Brilliant. (more…)
