Talking Head: Free (and cheap) Beer!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

With all the new breweries that have come to Georgia in the last two to three years, the trip to the beer cooler at your local package store can be somewhat intimidating. Add to that the increased price of craft beers, and it can be difficult to plop down $8-10 on a 6-pack of an unknown quantity. That’s where beer tastings and beer dinners come in. For little or no money, you can sample new beers and get a sense of both the styles and brands that are worth your hard-earned money. There is no shortage of opportunities to sample beers in Atlanta. Here are a few regular or semi-regular tastings that are going on around town, along with a few upcoming beer dinners.

Hop City Craft Beer & Wine store hosts free beer tastings most every Wednesday at Octane Coffee Bar & Lounge across the street from their retail store. Magic Hat beers will be featured at this week’s tasting (July 15). In two weeks (July 29), sample beers from Sierra Nevada. Hop City has also teamed up with neighborhood caterer Figs & Honey, who operate Tiny Bistro, to host wine and beer events. Sign up for Hop City’s email list or become a fan on Facebook to get updates on the featured beers. (more…)

The dining room at WaterHaven

PRETTY IN GREEN: The dining room at WaterHaven

It’s hard to believe that restaurants are still opening in Atlanta. The withering economy has devastated many, especially fine-dining spots, but newcomers keep popping up.

Two such restaurants are WaterHaven (75 Fifth St., 404-214-6740, www.waterhavenatl.com) in Technology Square and 5 Seasons Brewing Westside (1000 Marietta St., 404-875-3232, www.5seasonsbrewing.com). Both feature menus of “contemporary American” cuisine at fairly moderate prices. Both make noises about organic food and sustainability. And both were open less than two weeks when I visited.

I’ll save the best for the last. That means I’ll start with 5 Seasons, which is the spawn of a popular restaurant and brewery of the same name in Sandy Springs. Owner Dennis Lange and chef/owner David Larkworthy, with the help of brewmaster Crawford Moran, also opened a location in Alpharetta two years ago.

Field of Greens at Whippoorwill Farm

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Sunday, Nov. 15, celebrate with the salt of the earth at the Field of Greens festival at Whippoorwill Hollow Organic Farm. Whippoorwill is 74 acres of organic greens, 35 miles east of Atlanta in Walnut Grove. Atlanta’s farm-to-table favs are turning out for chef demos from the Brick Store Pub, Farm 255, Woodfire Grill, Food 101, 5 Seasons Brewing, and Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen.

Field of Greens offers festival-fun classics from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; pony rides, raffles, arts and crafts, face-painting, and a farmers’ market. The event runs with its green theme, setting up recycling and local clean energy booths, not to mention, providing good old locally grown chow.

All proceeds benefit Georgia farmers and Slow Food Atlanta.

Cost is $3 for adults or FREE if you buy a food ticket ($10 per person; $20 per family). Children under 12 are also FREE.

My friend Broderick Smylie, the camera-toting foodie extraordinare, hit Amuse Cochon at 5 Seasons Brewing on Sept. 29.

The Slow Food Atlanta benefit featured Chefs Todd Mussman (Muss and Turner’s), Jay Swift (4th and Swift), Allan Benton (Benton Smoky Mountain Country Hams) and Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s. They competed to make the best use of five Heritage pigs. Rathbun took the top prize.

Below are some of Broderick’s pictures. You can see more here. And check out Broderick’s site here.
