Brunch at Babette’s

Monday, March 16th, 2009

My friend Rose D’Agostino and I hit Babbette’s Cafe in Poncey-Highland for brunch Sunday.

This restaurant’s dining room remains one of the most hospitable in town and Chef Marla Adams’ cooking is pure comfort. Rose ordered the oyster sandwich and I had eggs scrambled with feta and a side-order of cheese grits.

The restaurant offers a prix fixe menu Tuesdays through Thursdays and this week’s includes the choice of paella. (Cost is not mentioned on the website, weirdly enough.) The hitch is that you have to be seated by 6:15 p.m. People really eat that early?

Attention gluttons and drunks!

Stopped by Slice Pizza in Glenwood Park this weekend for brunch and found an amazing deal. Full brunch buffet, unlimited slices of pizza (up to four toppings) plus UNLIMITED drinks, for $13.50 per person. Kids under 6 for only $2.

Now, is this the best brunch in town? No. But it is fully acceptable, and the nasty grease lover in me found a horrid thrill in the breakfast pizza. Included in the buffet is coffee (it’s not great coffee, the one real drawback of the deal), juice, cereal, fruit, eggs, breakfast meats, and decent carved turkey.

Also included are unlimited alcoholic beverages, limited to mimosas, bellinis, screwdrivers and bloody marys. The staff is not one bit conflicted about this deal, and even seems to revel in the idea, bringing carafes of drinks until you tell them to stop. Admittedly the alcohol to juice ratio in the mimosas we drank was pretty heavily juicy, but the psychological trick worked, and I felt like I was getting a real deal.
