Mouthful: Burritos

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

food_mouthful20WEBEl Taco Veloz: If you’re turned off by loads of filler stuffed into your burrito, head to this favorite of Mexican transplants and lovers of the cuisine. Any taco filling is available in burrito form — minus the rice and other usual suspects. Instead, the soft flour tortillas are packed with nothing but one of the many fillings such as soft shreds of barbacoa (slow-cooked beef) coated in a silky lacquer of its own fat and juices, or a chile relleno filled with gooey cheese. Some of the locations have a drive-thru, but park it and head inside so you can grab a few goodies from the salsa bar to eat with your meal. 5670 Roswell Road, 404-252-5100; and other metro Atlanta locations.

Forgery, burritos and nuclear nachos

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Oh look, it’s a big painting by Vincent Van Gogh. Or is it by Elmyr de Hory, the famous forger of the last century whose story was famously told in Clifford Irving’s book, Fake? Whatever, Elmyr (1091 Euclid Ave., 404-588-0250) is a burrito joint with a clever theme.

We ate here recently and had a pretty good meal. I suggest you pass on the nachos with several varieties of chili peppers, including countless jalapeños (right), unless you have a cast-iron stomach. They taste good going down and then. …

Wayne ordered a burrito stuffed with grilled fish. I got one that wrapped fajitas — steak and more peppers — and red pinto beans. If you have choice, go for the pintos rather than the alternative black beans. The beans made me nostalgic for the old Tortillas.

Prices are low here and the vibe is very alternative-20s. I’m sure you won’t mind being twice the age of the rest of the customers. If you do mind, remember that it’s a restaurant that celebrates a forger. Go ahead and pretend you’re 22.

Panchero’s, a Mexican chain that has just opened its first Atlanta location, is offering $1 burritos today:

Panchero’s Mexican Grill, which just opened up downtown, is running a $1 burrito special from 2-7 pm today.  They are located at 400 W. Peachtree St., Suite 2, Atlanta, 30308.  They are at the corner of Ivan Allen and W.Peachtree just passed the downtown W Hotel and in the same strip as Mellow Mushroom.  There is 1-hour free parking in the lot behind the Mellow Mushroom.

The concept is similar to Chipotle, Moe’s, etc.

Atlanta gets Barberitos restaurants

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Not one, but 10 of the burrito joints are planned in our dear city over the next three years. Specific locations include Midtown, Vinings and Buckhead.

What’s Barberitos? Think Willy’s, but with spinach tortillas and fish tacos as added options to the menu.

Hat tip to Joe Guy Collier at the AJC, who has the coolest name of anybody at that paper.
