Here and there

It’s time for your annual fix of New Mexico green chilies. All locations of Taqueria del Sol are stocked with them and are offering chile rellenos at dinner only. As I recall, the restaurant prepared a set number of these every night during last year’s season and ran out fairly often. So, go early. …

Lance Gummere, chef at the Shed on Glenwood, continues to produce new riffs on the slider every Wednesday night, when the restaurant offers sliders for $3 each. Last night, there was a new one stuffed with cotto ham, tallegio and fig jam. The other newbie featured fried mozzarella with roasted tomatoes. Both delicious and it’s cheaper than cooking at home. …

Are you a Krystal hog? Then be sure to show up at 1 p.m. on Sun., Sept. 13, at Lenox Square:

At the Krystal Square Off VI Atlanta Qualifier,
professional and amateur eaters will battle it out to see who can
consume the most Krystal Burgers and Big Angus Burgers in an 8-minute
eating contest. For the first time in Krystal Square Off history,
eaters will contend with two new rule changes—Big Angus Burger Bonus
Points and a No Dunking policy—that drastically alter the face of the
competition and have forced eaters to rethink their strategies.

And once again, five amateur hopefuls will be chosen on the spot an
hour before the qualifying eating contest to go head-to-head and
bite-to-bite against professional eaters. The winner of this event
earns one of the 12 coveted seats at the final table of the Krystal
Square Off VI World Hamburger Eating Championship, where the top
eaters compete for a whopping $50,000 in cash prizes, the largest cash
purse in competitive eating history

Blogging the bloggers

Have you visited my other site, Savory Exposure? My “photo name” is Broderick Smylie. I took all these pictures … except the blurry ones.

But seriously, folks, nobody depicts the restaurant scene like Broderick. Bookmark him now. …

Who would have guessed? The FoodieBuddha likes tea more than coffee. He’s very peaceful. He’s inventoried the new selection of teas at Danneman’s. Bookmark his site too. …

Jennifer Zyman, the Blissful Glutton and author of our Cheap Eats column, has just returned from a visit to Madrid, Berlin and Prague. Check out her pictures of Madrid, probably my favorite big city in the world (with Sevilla, south of there, being my favorite small city). Unfortunately, Spain’s economy is tanking in a major way. …

Steakhead has started a tour of dining deals under $25. We must be on the same wavelength. His first visit was to Fritti, where Wayne and I dined a few nights ago too. …

Bill Addison waxes Proustian during a final visit to Pano’s and Paul’s on his Atlanta Magazine blog. …

Some of the folks on Atlanta Cuisine are complaining about a dip in quality and escalating prices at Dynamic Dish. They blame the restaurant’s success. I continue to have good meals there — when I can get in the damn place. I called a few days ago to reserve space for pizza night and got a recording that said they were all booked up. Grrrr.

Do you read books?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

This is from a news release:

Danneman’s, the popular new coffee shop in the Old Fourth Ward, now offers customers the chance to receive a free medium cup of regular coffee in return for bringing in a gently used book to help stock its lending library. Customers can “check out” books from the library on the honor system, and bring the books back when they are finished.

Customers are also welcome to linger with their books at Danneman’s while enjoying the locally roasted coffee, freshly baked pastries and breakfast foods, and selection of sandwiches and salads. The retro-nostalgic coffee shop, housed in a two-story historic brick building, is also a free WiFi hotspot.

Old Fourth Ward resident Joe Stewardson and co-owner Kate Pedrick opened the playful and inviting neighborhood coffee shop in the summer of 2008. Open daily, Danneman’s also hosts an array of events and art openings, modern dance classes, Tango milonga’s, open-mic nights, DJs, live music, and more on its spacious second floor. The second floor is also available to rent for special events and private parties.

Danneman’s coffee shop is just one of the latest additions supporting the ongoing revitalization of the Old Fourth Ward’s Auburn/Edgewood Commercial District. It is located at the corner of Boulevard and Edgewood Ave. (466 Edgewood Ave., 404-380-1393).

Drink coffee, write, dance the tango

Friday, July 11th, 2008

During our visit to Cafe Circa last night, we noticed that Danneman’s has opened next door, in the space formerly occupied by Javaology. It’s named after the grocery store that occupied the space for many years. (See a picture here.)

Those of us who use coffee shops as offices get a special welcome from Danneman’s, according to its website:

The 2,500-sq-ft working area above Danneman’s known as “the Library” features small private workspace tables for getting down to business. The library will always be open between 9-5 everyday. Sometimes it will be open in the evenings if there are no events scheduled. If the library is in use please feel free to work downstairs.

Don’t worry if you forgot your book-bag at home, there are large jars of pencils, pens, paper clips, and note paper for a small charge, a paper cutter, and hole punch to use and even a printer/copier serving as functional art above an antique card catalog holder.

Among those events that might keep you downstairs are regular live performances of tango music, preceded by lessons. Check here for more information.

Sounds kinda wacky, doesn’t it? Well, its owner is a former psychologist who is into tango. Read her blog, which narrates re-doing the space with her husband, here.
