Ria’s Bluebird and Thumbs Up get props from Esquire

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Esquire magazine has put Ria’s Bluebird and Thumbs Up Diner on its list of the 59 best breakfast places in America.

It said this about a popular Thumbs Up dish:

The Heap comes in its own skillet. Spuds. Onions. Cheddar jack. Green peppers. Two eggs. Two slices of bacon. The Heap warms the soul. Especially when you add a quarter bottle of Tabasco.

And Ria Pell’s restaurant and neck got this description:

Across from Oakland Cemetery, where Margaret Mitchell is buried, tatted-up chef Ria Pell (the one on her neck says HATE) plays around with Southern classics while respecting the basics. Worth the small-parking-lot hassles and long wait.

Ria’s has also been lauded recently by GQ and the New York Times. I’ve received no reports on opening of her new restaurant, Sauced, on Edgewood.

(Edit: Name of Sauced corrected; see comments)

Shaun’s and Trois make Best New Restaurant list

Friday, October 12th, 2007

Esquire magazine has just released its annual Best New Restaurants list, picked by food and travel correspondent John Mariani, and two Atlanta restaurants made the cut: Shaun’s, headed by chef Shaun Doty, and Trois.

Fearing’s in Dallas won the magazine’s Restaurant of the Year award. Creative Loafing’s Food Editor Besha Rodell is in Dallas this weekend and will be checking out Fearing’s; look for a blog entry on her experience next week.
