I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna eat this anymore

Someone on Air America played this clip from the 1976 film Network today before interviewing director Sidney Lumet. During the last decade, this particular speech has often been cited for its prescience, but it is downright eerie to listen to it now.

Lumet said that the film has usually been described as a satire but that he and writer Paddy Chayefsky never regarded it as such. They felt they were describing what was already happening in America over 30 years ago.

In Howard Beale’s litany of what’s gone wrong with America, even the deterioration of food quality is mentioned.
