Where do world travelers on a budget dine in Atlanta?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

You live in, say, Paris and you are planning a trip to Zee Atlanta. You are curious what the International Herald Tribune has to say about dining on a budget in Margaret Mitchell’s hometown. This is what you find, as far as restaurants go, in a Nov. 6 story entitled “Best of Atlanta is free history”:

FOOD: What is a trip to the South without finger-licking soul food? Try Mae’s Soul Food at 34 Peachtree St. NW. The mac and cheese and fried chicken is just like your momma’s (that is, if your momma could cook).

Dine at Six Feet Under at 437 Memorial Drive SE, a seafood restaurant and pub that overlooks the Historic Oakland Cemetery, http://www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com.

Ru San’s 1529 Piedmont Ave. NE has weekday lunchtime all-you-can eat sushi buffet, complete with miso soup, fried rice and stir fry, that is more than worth the price of $8 per person.

DeKalb Farmer’s Market at 300 East Ponce De Leon Ave. in Decatur is the best place for an afternoon snack. Sample exotic foods in the 140,000-square-foot (13,000-square-kilometer) international grocery store or dine in the Market Restaurant where the buffet is charged by the ounce, http://www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com.

Six Feet Under occupies new space

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The original location of Six Feet Under on Memorial Drive has moved across the Cherokee Ave. intersection to the Jane, a new mixed-use development.

We visited Tuesday night. We were anxious to try out the rooftop dining space but my lousy knees made that impossible. The restaurant doesn’t have an elevator, although, ironically, the building’s original use was as an elevator factory. Grrr.

We had a good meal. I had my usual shrimp and grits, while Wayne had the ginormous chicken Caesar salad. You can see his hands in the background of this picture, pounding his laptop, which he carried to dinner with us, so as not to interrupt work on his doctoral dissertation — eight years in the making and soon to be complete!

The restaurant’s space feels huge but it’s convivial, with basically the same ambiance as the first location.

I completed the meal with the restaurant’s bread pudding, a huge serving of gooey, chewy and boozy.

Mouthful: Po’boys

food_mouthful4-1_19.jpgStar Provisions To Go: A long-standing item on an ever-evolving seasonal menu, this posh po’boy is a favorite lunchtime item among regulars. The kitchen starts with a soft bun that’s slathered in a remoulade brightened by fresh chives and lemon juice. Large Georgia white shrimp covered in a buttermilk, flour and cornstarch mixture are fried in peanut oil then tucked into the bread along with bright green butter lettuce, sliced local tomatoes and dill pickles for added tang. 1198 Howell Mill Road, Suite 100. 404-365-0410. www.starprovisions.com.

Coming soon to Grant Park

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I hear Tin Lizzy’s Cantina is what’s planned for Grant Park’s Six Feet Under location (SFU is moving up the block into the Jane Lofts.)

Six Feet Under in Grant Park moving

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

We heard a rumor last week that Six Feet Under in Grant Park will be moving out of its much-loved location, and today the liquor license process showed the rumor to be true. Six Feet Under has applied for a license at 437 Memorial Drive, just across Cherokee from the current location. That’s in the Jane lofts, by our reckoning. We’ll keep you posted as the story develops…

From Baby Jane’s kitchen?

Remember that scene in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? when Bette Davis (as Baby Jane) prepares Joan Crawford (as Blanche) a big roasted rat for dinner?

It came to mind Sunday while dining at Six Feet Under, which gets this week’s award for the oddest name for an appetizer — “spicy rat toes” (above). We dined at the Memorial Drive location of the restaurant Sunday night and I ate three of these before digging into my usual shrimp and grits (right).

The rat toes are jalapeños stuffed with a whole shrimp and wrapped in bacon. They’re served with a side of ranch dressing, which I totally don’t get. They were tasty enough without salad dressing.

The shrimp and grits were a bit watery but still yummy. They were garnished with some super-fresh asparagus stalks and lots of crispy fried onions.
