Pollan pushes a petition!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

As Cliff mentioned in an earlier blogpost, acclaimed author and organic food activist Michael Pollan will be speaking at the Georgia Organics Conference on March 21, 2009 in Decatur. Slow Food Atlanta gives guests the opportunity to meet and greet with Pollan and chow down on what the earth has to offer.

In bigger news, Pollan has put together a petition encouraging President Obama to nominate a Secretary of Agriculture who supports sustainable family farmers. Add your name to the list of over 13,000 people already taking action.

Field of Greens at Whippoorwill Farm

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Sunday, Nov. 15, celebrate with the salt of the earth at the Field of Greens festival at Whippoorwill Hollow Organic Farm. Whippoorwill is 74 acres of organic greens, 35 miles east of Atlanta in Walnut Grove. Atlanta’s farm-to-table favs are turning out for chef demos from the Brick Store Pub, Farm 255, Woodfire Grill, Food 101, 5 Seasons Brewing, and Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen.

Field of Greens offers festival-fun classics from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; pony rides, raffles, arts and crafts, face-painting, and a farmers’ market. The event runs with its green theme, setting up recycling and local clean energy booths, not to mention, providing good old locally grown chow.

All proceeds benefit Georgia farmers and Slow Food Atlanta.

Cost is $3 for adults or FREE if you buy a food ticket ($10 per person; $20 per family). Children under 12 are also FREE.

An Italian festival, an ice cream contest

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Julie Shaffer of Slow Food Atlanta issues these invitations in the organization’s most recent newsletter:

You are all invited to attend Serata Italiana, The first Italian Festival of Food and Wine, sponsored by the Italy-Atlanta Foundation, 3-6 p.m. June 1, at the Buckhead Ballroom on Roswell Road. …

Mark your calendars for our second annual Ice Cream Social, on Saturday, June 21, at noon, at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market, located in the parking lot of the Cathedral of St. Phillip in Buckhead. Last year’s event was delicious and so much fun! Again, it will be a competition, and I encourage all home cooks and professional chefs to participate. Last year’s prize went to Greg Hamon, a student at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, with his Dutch Apple Pie Crunch ice cream. Be creative! Last year, I made lemon-basil ice cream, and learned the hard way that it must be packed in dry ice. Please drop me an e-mail by June 10 to let me know if you intend to participate as a contestant.
