Sex and the City debate

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

In its six seasons on HBO, Sex and the City” reinvented mainstream perceptions of New York City, fashion and gal-pal gossip. But after seeing the big-screen version, we couldn’t help but wonder … why go to the theater when you can watch reruns on TBS for free?

WOMEN
A BIG MISTAKE? Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker, left) and Big struggle to keep it together in Sex and the City: The Movie.

David Lee: As a man, it was fun to watch the women. I hate to use the verb, but watching them bond. I think the movie was at its best when it showed them kind of getting each other’s backs.

Debbie: I see what you’re saying, but it always confused me a little bit, that the premise is, “I’m this independent woman, but my life revolves around men.” And then it gets wrapped up all nicely with the four gals sitting there drinking, and saying, “Oh aren’t boys silly and we don’t really need them.”

Besha: It was always strange to me that Carrie’s family was never mentioned. Even in the movie, she’s getting married! Where’s her family? In the same way that those women present an unobtainable view of how you would spend your life and money, they also presented this unobtainable model for how you should live, who your relationships should be with and how much time you can put toward those relationships.

Debbie: From a male’s perspective, how do you perceive the dynamic that the four of them have?

David Lee: Thomas’ response is a sigh.

Thomas: I think it was definitely realistic. But it’s also terrible. God. How much of their problems do they create themselves? I mean, by harping on it, are they creating problems because they need something to fall apart so they can put it back together?

ferguson.jpgSoftware entrepreneur, member of the Council on Foreign Relations and M.I.T.-trained political scientist, the exceptionally accomplished Charles Ferguson has recently added “film director” to his impressive resume.

The winner of a special jury prize for documentaries at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, Ferguson’s directorial debut, No End in Sight is a haunting look at the many missteps, miscalculations and the plain arrogance that led the Bush administration to bungle
the Iraq War.

Heston

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

heston1.jpgPeople who know Heston call him the gentle giant. He’s the big dude with the voice of an angel. And his June full-length debut, Storyteller, has been a long time coming. The Island of Dominica (British West Indies) native doesn’t fit into the standard soul singer/songwriter box that has birthed many of Atlanta’s recent greats. Instead, he peppers his emotional soul with tinges of reggae and world beat. It all adds up to diverse mix from a heartfelt performer. To hear a taste of his acoustic set, listen to a podcast of his visit to Creative Loafing, which features Billy Odom backing him on guitar.

Underground Atlanta Podcast

Alley of broken dreams - Underground Atlanta roundtable

When the World of Coca-Cola opens in May in its new location next door to the Georgia Aquarium, the bottom is expected to fall out of Underground Atlanta. That’s the prediction of a recent study conducted by the city’s finance department, which crunched the numbers for Underground and forecast a dismal future unless a major turnaround takes place. With the loss of the World of Coke as a tourist draw — shifting its 800,000 annual visitors to Centennial Park — revenues at Underground are expected to nosedive by 20 percent, continuing an ongoing decline in sales.

Atlanta taxpayers currently foot the bill for about $8 million a year in debt service on $85 million in bonds the city issued to relaunch Underground Atlanta in 1989. Right now, the only money the city earns from Underground comes from the adjoining parking decks, not from its shops, restaurants or bars.

So how does the city avoid a costly bailout of Underground? Creative Loafing invited a councilman, an urban planner, a downtown business owner and a community activist to discuss how Underground could be transformed from a failing subterranean mall into a vibrant component of a newly energized central business district.

To hear the councilman, the architect, the club owner, and the activist go off on Underground’s faults and wax eloquent on its future, check out our podcast.

Year in Culture 2006: A look at film, music, and the arts

In 2006, both the United States and the city of Atlanta featured people, places and things heading in opposite directions. Cynthia McKinney, for example went from movie star (American Blackout) to deposed congresswoman. Trends ebbed and flowed. At times, it seemed like we didn’t know whether we were coming or going. In this look back at the year in culture, we examine the touchstones that affected our lives, whether they were hot or cold.
