Survivor, Political Edition: No good can come of this

Word from LA is that Survivor creator Mark Burnett is cementing plans to create a political reality show. As the LAT reports, Burnett wants to use MySpace to solicit political wanna-bes, who would create videos and virtual campaigns next year as the real presidential campaigns heat up. Finalists would end up in debates, with the winner getting $1 million to donate to charity. (My suggestion: the Richard Hatch Legal Fund.)

The name of the show would be “Independent.”

As amusing as I’m sure it all would be (I cop to being a total Survivor freak until the past two seasons; I was in a long-distance office pool based on it for years), the thought that the fake politicians would outshine the real politicians is a very scary one — and a very real one. Can you say Senator Sanjaya Malakar? What part of a Burnett reality show would not be more entertaining, more real than the campaigns we are witnessing now? (Except McCain’s “All is Well” Iraq War tour, which had a marvelously surreal watchability.)

All that having been said, you know I am there if this show actually gets picked up by a major network. Political Whore for Congress!
