Afternoon Roundup
May 14, 2007 at 2:55 pm by Wayne GarciaIt happened in Monterrey / in old Mexico:
- Weekend find: the best explanation of the phenomenon that is Ronda Storms ever written. Period.
- Newt inches closer. Even as he hurts America.
- When the mayor of a city complains about newspaper reporters not coming to council meetings, you know something is fucked up.
- Who fired the Gonzalez Eight?
- The Trib’s editorial smear. And the subject of the editorial takes difference with it, too.
- OFF TOPIC: A guy named Stoner, arrested for growing pot. And after the commercials, a wacky squirrel that, get this, waterskies!
- Sayfie: GOP primary up for grabs.
- Another Palm Beach county commissioner in a spot of trouble.
- MSM journalists don’t get blogging.
- But presidential campaigns do; Dodd hires a traveling blogger.
- I’m thinking we could use a nasty little courthouse bitch-session blog like this one here in Pinellas and Hillsborough.
- The Club for Growth throws some economic love Rudy’s way.
- And Rudy wants a bigger Army, by the way.
- “I’m not sure who you’d rather have knocking at your front door — a Scientologist or the BBC.”
- Pinellas County tax-cutters unite.
- CJR confirms our cover story from last month: Editorial cartoonists are a vanishing breed.
- Paging Bob Ross. Paging Bob Ross. Uh, never mind.
- A touching Mother’s Day tale.

Somehow, I think the Trib and the superintendent will regret picking this particular fight. The total spent on training the board (a little over $24,000 since 2004 according to the editorial) is miniscule, especially when you compare it to the $2.2 billion 2006 budget.
It’s worth that much money — hell, it’s worth ten times that much money to get a school board that knows enough to do the policy-setting and oversight job we elect them and pay them to do. Carping and kvetching about that piddling amount of money (half of Elia’s bonus, as I understand) makes the Tribune’s editorial board seem even more petty and irrelevant that usual.
Rosemary Godreau seems to be hijacking the Trib’s editorial page to run a vendetta against two board members who won’t fall in line and kiss the Trib’s ring or give her buddy Mary Ellen Elia some help by trying to cow the other board members.
