Rudy and the firefighters
July 12, 2007 at 12:33 pm by Wayne GarciaRudy Giuliani’s entire credibility as America’s Mayor is on the line as his campaign fights to counter a devastating 13-minute video being distributed by the national firefighters union that alleges his 9/11 leadership is an “urban legend.”
Some NY firefighters insist that Giuliani’s missteps and inaction in the run-up to 9/11 cost firefighters their lives, and they condemn him in the video in soundbites such as this one from a deputy fire chief:
We have the remains of dead heroes at the garbage dump because of Giuliani and his administration and they’re still there today and they won’t remove them.
Giuliani’s campaign has characterized the video as a partisan smear from a Democrat-supporting union organization. It quotes a retired FDNY firefighter who was at the World Trade Center on 9/11:
It’s unfortunate but not surprising that the IAFF union bosses have once again taken the low road in a move clearly out of step with their membership. In 2008, I expect these same union bosses to endorse Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or John Edwards, so today’s comments are just a first step in that process. Fortunately, rank and file firefighters know the difference between politics and leadership.
Here’s the video, take a look for yourself to gauge whether Rudy is in trouble or if this is just a Swift Boat-style smear:
