The Short List — Thurs., April 10

Isn’t it inspiring when local luminaries attract national attention to Central Florida?
- From “It’s gonna be a blowout!” to “It’s a miracle we’re still in the lead,” The Clinton campaign begins manipulating expectations ahead of the Pennsylvania primary.
- Obama snubs the gay press first in Texas and now in Pennsylvania. Shocking! There are gay people in Texas.
- Long lines? At Tampa International?!!? Thank you American Airlines!
- Packing heat at the office? A-OK with the Florida Legislature.
- The sordid tale of Joe Lieberman’s crashing website.
- Scrambled eggs can kill!
- Gizmodo’s take on the future of high-speed internet: “We’re Totally Screwed.”
- Can anyone beat Tiger at Augusta?

Where are people working that makes them need to bring a gun for protection?
And Steve Stricker is going to win the Masters. You read it here first.

Look out Steve Stricker, Tiger has a gun!
That is Tiger’s workplace, right?
I hope you’re not too lonely today and tomorrow Kyle. If you need someone to exchange witty banter with, just post a comment and I’ll be there.

Cabbies, Sub shops that are open at 3am, not to mention Pros and Dealers. With the new law, could they still tack on a gun charge if you were workin’ when they busted you? As for Joe’s comment, I can see a whole new angle for the NHL, NBA and NFL.

You know, Cabbies I can definitely see. Late night restaurants, too. Those make sense.
However, this law just allows you to keep the firearm in your car at your workplace, and not actually bring it into the office/store/etc.
In other words, this law greatly benefits the far-too-tightly wound postal worker who decides one day, after the mail sorter breaks for the sixth time that week, to go out to the parking lot, grab his colt 45 from the Glovebox of his Geo Metro and plug six of his fellow mail hounds. It will not help the late-night fast food clerk who gets held up at the drive-thru, unless the clerk can convince the thief that he keeps the Mickey D’s safe in his car and he’ll just go get that cash and be back in a jiff.

I have to admit that I was just having fun without reading the article, but after reviewing it, it seems like a waste of the legislatures valuable time to even bring this up for consideration. Concealed weapon permit in hand, unless you go bragging to your boss about the Desert Eagle you have stashed in your car, why is there a need for specific legislation here? Sans this law, even if you had said weapon in your car and you brought it out in the event you had to “protect the workplace” as the proponents speculate, I think it’s safe to say your job would be safe.

WP, agreed. That was my thought the entire time I was reading the article. There has to be other things the legislature could be focusing its efforts on.
And thanks Joe. It’s good knowing your blog will be there for me over these two horrific days.

It’s a complete waste of time, and it seems like a pander to the gun lobby. The thought that someone would come into my office and start shooting, and I would have the presence of mind/time to go out to my car, grab my gun and come back in to shoot the maniac is fantasy at best.
And, again, if I’m an office slave about to crack and I know my gun is in the car, all loaded and calling my name and the names of my coworkers that deserve a bullet in the forehead, will reason kick back in while I’m crossing the parking lot?
Then again, if I’m a nut bag who’s going to shoot up my place a business, I guess it doesn’t matter where I keep my guns. I’m going to make sure I have access to them when it’s time for my killing spree.
Just having this discussion has made me size up my coworkers and figure out who is most likely to shoot up the place. I’m not naming names, but the dude in sales who changed his name to a food stuff, I’m watching him.
April 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
It took this discussion to kickstart that train of thought? You clearly aren’t paranoid enough yet. Go watch some more Fox News while you wait for a visit from the MiBs, and just keep reminding yourself: they’ve been sizing you up for a long, long time.

Fyrebug has a fairly satisfying Tiger Woods Grand Slam game… Instead of wack-a-mole your hitting a golf ball with a wedge at Augusta National http://www.fyrebug.com/?p=5206 - they claims it’s Hole 10 –wherever– at least I can pretend I’m on the green and not at work.
April 10th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
I was thinking about it and I think I’m probably the one most likely to shoot up my office. That says a lot about the people I work with because I’m not planning on shooting up the office at all. But you know, if you HAD to pick someone…

Ol’ Charlton just croaked last week. Coincidence?
April 11th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Hey floophy, I checked out that Fryebug game. Although I find the Tiger Woods tie-in tenuous at best, there is something highly satisfying about the “Eye of the Tiger” soundtrack punctuated by the “thwack” of the club decking the golfer.
