The Short List — Thurs., May 8

Couch potatoes unite!
- The mother of the St. Pete courthouse gunman blames shootout on “antigovernment Web sites.”
- Clinton’s five big boo boos …
- … and her three options.
- Bush mucks with the FCC to help out his old buddy/election law-flouter John McCain.
- Toyota feels the sting of the U.S. economic slowdown.
- The high price of intelligence.
- The Olympic torch makes it to the protester-free summit of Mt. Everest.
- No GTA IV in India. Reason: a global shortage.

It seems to me that Hillary’s “misjudging the mood” was the Mistake of all Mistakes. No. 1 on TIME’s list of Clinton mistakes it appears as if all subsequent mistakes were a result of that one oversight. Misjudging the mood … it’s one of TIME’s less quantifiable and more philosophical reasons. And I like it. It gives me hope.

Sucks for India. The other day I took my girlfriend Michelle to a bar then stumbled outside and went back to her place in my stolen Hummer. Ran a few people over in the process. Michelle didn’t care though. We still had sex. Then later I ended up having to shoot a Russian mobster in the head out by the docks for sleeping with Michelle. It was awesome.

Kyle,
You threw for a loop with the “my girlfriend Michelle” part.

You don’t actually have GTA IV, do you Kyle?
If you do, man am I the jealous one. I find myself sitting up late at night, searching for PS3s and praying for a price cut.
It sucks to be both cheap as hell and heavily into electronics!

I have the ideal situation Joe. My friend Craig bought a copy for his Xbox 360 last weekend and we basically stayed up all Saturday night playing.
We’re going to play tonight too.
The Heath isn’t letting you buy a PS3 and GTA IV?

It’s not so much the Heath, which keeps telling me that I can afford it. I have made several calculations, and they go like this:
1. The PS3 & 360 are both about to get a price cut. The PS3 is changing to a smaller version of the Cell processor, which will allow the cost of manufacturing the unit to go down. Microsoft is going to have to cut to $299 to stay competitive with the Wii and Sony is going to have to come down as well. In my dreams, I could see a $250 360 and a $299 PS3, but my guess is $299 360 and $349 PS3 sometime over the summer. Since I’m an amazing tightwad, I feel I have to wait.
2. In comparing systems, I’m currently leaning PS3 because of the Blue-Ray player. I’m planning to upgrade my 10-year-old 32 inch Sony at the end of the year/ beginning of 2009, and I’m going to want a Blue-Ray player at that point. The PS3 is a “future proof” Blue-Ray, which I think adds value.
3. I know me, and if I ran out and bought a PS3, I would spend probably 20 hours a week with it to start. My girlfriend might have an objection to that. Plus, when Madden comes out in November, I might disappear forever.
4. I am a masochist who likes pain and to torture myself. Yes, I really want one. Sure, I want to play GTA IV something awful. But isn’t the pain of knowing I could go buy all the shit at any moment and choosing not to so much more exquisite than giving in to my desire?

Myself, I’ll wait for the PC version. CoD4 is currently adequate to satisfy my bloodlust and the Wii Fit in two weeks will fulfill my urge to splurge.(Can’t really justify another console to add to my menagerie just to play GTA. Vice City and San Andreas were just as fun 6 months later and IMO gameplay on the PC is loads better)

Gamers are borderline psychotic. No question about it in my mind. GTA allows you to get in touch with your inner Anton Chigurh.

So is that a Berlin Wall type border or more like the US-Canada sort? It’s much easier to cross some borders than others, particularly if no one is looking. Slaughtering virtual innocents is no less healthy an outlet than seeking some vicarious glory through one’s little-leaguer or sedating oneself with yet another episode of American Idol or FSM-forbid such “sporting” pasttimes as huntin’.
