The Short List — Mon., June 16

June 16, 2008 at 8:09 am by Joe Bardi

I usually don’t pimp golf, but Tiger Woods put on a show this weekend at the U.S. Open. His bum knee a constant distraction, Tiger made a dramatic birdie putt on the final hole to force an 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate.

As far as hosting/producing(?) “Meet the Press,” I’d like to see Gwen Ifill fill the position.

I’ll be sleeping until noon on Sundays (just like I do on Saturdays), if the gig goes to perma-smile gal Katie Couric.

  2. Joe Bardi Says:

I can’t imagine NBC bringing Couric back to fill the most coveted seat the network has to offer. IFill isn’t a bad choice, and she would break new ground due to her gender and race.

If I had to guess, NBC is going to try to give the slot to Chris Matthews. He has the best combination of political knowledge and gravitas, even if he is a blowhard. Hell, he even has his own MTP rip-off show on Sunday mornings that’s actually pretty good. (I catch it sometimes before my religious watching of Flashpoint.)

However, if Matthews is serious about that Senate run he mentioned a few months back, he’s liable to pull himself out of the running.

That leaves Keith Olbermann (too controversial), David Gregory (too “Chest Rockwell” for my tastes — Why not just bring back Stone Phillips?), Andrea Mitchell (Too old?) or Chuck Todd (far too green).

Man, NBC really is in a pickle, aren’t they.

After much hemming and hawing, my prediction is they let Brokaw host for a few weeks and then give it to Brian Williams. At least until after the election, when Chuck Todd takes over.

Agree. Chuck Todd should take over.
In the meantime you can buy a Russert bobblehead on Ebay.

Meet the Press must be interred with Tim Russert in a mausoleum and shrine at the Newseum in Washington DC.
