Obama speaks in Tampa

Barack Obama began his tour of Florida this morning with a huge rally in Tampa, playing to an estimated 10,000 supporters at the House the Ruth Built for Spring Training, aka Steinbrenner Field on North Dale Mabry Highway.

Our online producer Stephen Hammill went and has a report over on the Daily Loaf blog.

How did FLA media cover? Some excerpts after the jump.

March on Politics:

As the crowds thinned and made their way to the parking lots, Sonja Moffett of Tampa was near tears.

“I’m inspired by him as a person,” Moffett said. A single mother, she said his background gives her hope for her son.

“It’s a defining moment for me.…

The Buzz:

At least 6,000 people roared for Barack Obama and his calls to get out and vote and change the country: “We have tried it John McCain’s way. We have tried it George Bush’s way. It hasn’t worked. It’s time for something new. It is time to turn the page on eight years of economic policies that put Wall Street before Main Street but ended up hurting both. We need policies that grow our economy from the bottom up, so that every American, everywhere, has the chance to get ahead. Not just the person who owns the factory, but the men and women who work on its floor. Because if we’ve learned anything from this economic crisis, it’s that we’re all connected; we’re all in this together; and we will rise or fall as one nation -– as one people.”

St. Petersburg Times:

As tiny American flags waved throughout the crowd and chants of “Yes we can!” rang out, Barack Obama said an economic solution needs to come from the bottom up.

He blasted John McCain’s negative advertising, saying the McCain campaign is “out of touch,” and “running out of time.” He said McCain’s plan of buying up bad mortgages would be bad for the majority of America.

“We need a rescue plan for the middle class,” Obama said. “That’s why I’m running for president.”

Wonkette:

Speaking in where else but PHILLY earlier this month, Obama told the silly clowns there, “My White Sox are gone, so I’ll go ahead and root for the Phillies now.” NAME ONE PHILLIES PLAYER, NOOBAMA. We’ll wait. [Pause]. See, he can’t name one, otherwise he would’ve typed it in right here, so he obviously lies with his athletic “rooting.”

So then this ass-jockey goes on stage today in Florida with players from his supposed arch nemesis, the Tampa Bay Rays, who eliminated the Boston Red Sox last night and earned a trip to the World Series to play the Phillies. Naturally, he proceeds to get all gay about the Tampa Bay team:

“I have said from the beginning that I’m a unity candidate, bringing people together. So when you see a White Sox fan showing some love for the Rays and the Rays showing some love back, you know we’re onto something here,” Obama said.

He added that he considered cutting his hair in a Mohawk to show solidarity with the team’s players, but “My political advisers said they weren’t sure how that would play with swing voters.”

HA HA HA nice joke, Mr. Socialist Bomber.
