The New Media business model: begging

December 30, 2008 at 8:30 am by Wayne Garcia

That’s what Mother Jones is doing, trying to save the jobs of some of its investigative reporters in the D.C. bureau in this post:

Given the troubled times, it’s precisely now that hard-nosed investigative journalism rooted in progressive values can make a real difference. We’re thinking that you agree. But a major funder of our Washington, DC, bureau has suffered big losses on Wall Street, and it just doesn’t have the money to give us in 2009. Unless we can fill the budget gap, we have to cut the MoJo DC budget by about $125,000 and lay off investigative reporters. We don’t want to do it. That’s why we’re asking for your help.

Right now, please make as generous a donation as you can to support the DC bureau. It’ll really make a difference.

Sincerely,
David Corn

Bureau Chief
Mother Jones

So much for those talking about the foundation-supported, nonprofit model of journalism. It’s subject to the same whims and stresses as the for-profit model.
