In the much-ado-about-no-science fight that is the movement against cell towers on school grounds in Hillsborough, foes lost a round today when county officials said their hands are tied and they cannot grant a moratorium.

The St. Petersburg Times’ reports:

The federal Telecommunications Act of 1996 preempts local government authority to regulate the siting of cell phone towers for environmental or health reasons, said assistant county attorney Adam Gormly.

Instead, commissioners voted to look into amending their land-development code to require the Hillsborough County school district to hold two public hearings before approving a cell phone tower on school property, and to notify parents of all children at the affected school of the meetings.
