Gov. Charlie Crist endorses Deveron Gibbons in St. Petersburg mayor’s race

It is a only bit of a surprise (and far from “stunning,” as the campaign puts it), since Deveron Gibbons has long been a supporter of Charlie Crist and a beneficiary of the Gov’s appointments, but Crist has publicly endorsed Gibbons in the mayor’s race in St. Petersburg. Normally, politicians running in their own races have their hands full and stay out of other campaigns where they could make enemies. Nonethless, Crist is on board with Team Gibbons. Here is the news release, and DL the entire release after the jump:

In a stunning development in the race for Mayor of St. Petersburg, Governor Charlie Crist today announced his full support for local business, education and civic leader Deveron Gibbons.

“Deveron Gibbons is the story of a hometown kid who’s becoming a hometown champion for St. Pete,” Governor Crist said.

“While many people outside St. Petersburg know Deveron as smart, determined, and experienced at every level of government, here in St. Pete, Deveron is known as someone who will go the distance to be helpful.

“His resume of civic leadership – in business, education, housing, and the arts – is well established, his fiscal conservatism is well-documented and his people-first attitude means St. Petersburg would prosper under another great mayor,” Crist said.

“I enthusiastically endorse Deveron Gibbons for Mayor, and I know he will be a great mayor we can all turn to,” Crist said.

“Charlie Crist has been a champion for the people of Florida, and I couldn’t be more pleased, or more humbled, by his show of support,” Gibbons said.

Deveron Gibbons has been endorsed by a host of local, regional and state leaders, and leads the mayoral field in local contributors.
