Child’s play

November 12th, 2007 by David Lee Simmons in Books, Family, News

What the hell is up with the children’s music craze? (Sorry for the potty mouth.) It’s seemingly everywhere. In listening to Laurie Berkner, I chalk it up to tapping into the melodic sensibilities of acoustic pop-folk — what’s catchy for adults often is catchy for kids. Berkner performs with bandmates Susie Lampert and Adam Bernstein on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at Symphony Hall (1280 Peachtree St.).

To hear just how catchy this group is, check out the YouTube clip above for “I’m Gonna Catch You.” I swear, unless you’re a total skinhead, you might, just might, groove to the sound of the woman called “Pied Piper of the Preschool Set.”

Ever the shrewd one — she plays to kids, but definitely isn’t one — Berkner just put out a new picture book, The Story of My Feelings, based on her band’s hit song. In fact, the DVD We Are … the Laurie Berkner Band (or is that “brand”?) — the first children’s DVD co-released by Starbucks — entered the Billboard music-video chart at No. 1, going quadruple-platinum.

  1. Curt Holman Says:

For some 1980s musicians, kid’s music is a career second act. You probably know that Dan Zanes of The Del Fuegos is a major kid-oriented musicians. Evan Lurie of The Lounge Lizards is music director of the crazily brilliant musical kids show ‘The Backyardigans.’ (Don’t get me started about ‘The Backyardigans.’) Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Scorchers has an alter ego as Farmer Jason. He can be seen in this clip performing ‘Punk Rock Skunk.’
