See & Do: The Beginning: The Art of Drawing

December 4th, 2007 by Felicia Feaster in News, Visual Arts

tuesseedo.jpgThere is virtuosity and some intriguing content on display in THE BEGINNING: THE ART OF DRAWING, continuing at the Atlanta Art Gallery today, DEC. 4. Justin Balliet’s gorgeous Vermeer-reminiscent “Out of the Shadows” and Kate Sammons “My Mother” are remarkable photo-realist, light-infused charcoal drawings. Helen Crispino balances equally extraordinary technique with a tendency toward kitsch in a charcoal portrait of a fluffy, snow-colored kitty. Rodney Grainger’s large-scale and psychologically complicated drawings treat racial politics in a pleasingly understated way, especially in examining the connection between black caretakers and white children without romance or mystification (right). Through Jan. 5. Free. Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. 3005 Peachtree Road, Suite B. 404-816-7322. www.atlantaartgallery.com.
