Mr. Lowe should be embarassed to have made such a statement about the library. It was insulting and insensitive to all the people in city government who approved the design as well as to the architects. The proposed demolishing of the Buckhead Library is typical of what goes on in Atlanta when developers value financial gain over art, which is, unfortunately, most of the time. Preserve this building! This is a city that has a pretty horrible record when it comes to both recognizing preservation-worthy buildings and supporting exciting new ideas in architecture. Most of our urban landscape is littered with fairly bland buildings. Architectural creativity in Atlanta is too often met with scorn, and that is unfortunately, a sad refection of residents' overall feeling about the arts: conservative and familiar is good, new and innovative is bad. As I just wrote on the petition – Atlanta is in need of more instances of vital and creative architecture like this one, not less. Preserve this building!
