Song of the Living Dead: The trailer for the play

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Dad’s Garage Theatre’s zombie musical Song of the Living Dead (written by Matt Horgan and Travis Sharp, with songs by Eric Frampton) has its world premiere on Fri., June 6. To give you a taste, the playhouse and Cougars Film Group have produced this trailer, and it’s probably the most effective Youtube-ready video clip I’ve ever seen for a new stage play. The actors include Gabriel Dean, Z Gillispie, Megan Leahy, Erin Lorette, Stephen Platinum, Gina Rickicki and George Faughnan (whose preacher song already looks like a classic):

Kung Fu Panda’s dumpling battle

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

My review of Kung Fu Panda has hit the internet — and so, too, has one of my favorite scenes from the surprisingly entertaining cartoon feature. The voices are provided by Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman, and it’ll probably make you hungry for dumplings. I recommend you watch the bigger, clearer image here, but this is good enough:

(It’s a lot better than the film’s music video for “Kung Fu Fighting,” Cee-Lo’s presence notwithstanding.)

Willy Wonka: “You get nothing!”

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

To piggyback on David Lee’s post about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory showing at the Plaza Theatre this week, here’s my favorite Wonka-related mash-up video. It’s very short: the annoying “logo” clip that precedes it is about as long as the Wonka clip itself, which brings in the audio from one scary movie and the video from another.

Speaking of creepy takes on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, here’s a surprisingly persuasive version of the trailer as if it were a horror film: “The suspense is terrible … I hope it lasts.”

Prince Caspian: The Chronic(what?)cles of Narnia

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

300px-lazy_sunday.pngThe Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (reviewed here) isn’t just the sequel to The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe: it marks a kind of forgotten anniversary. The previous Narnia movie inspired “Saturday Night Live’s “Lazy Sunday,” which debuted on Dec. 17, 2005. The second “SNL Digital Short,” “Lazy Sunday” depicts Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg rapping like gangstas as they buy cupcakes and go to see Narnia:

Now quiet in the theater or it’s gonna get tragic.
We’re ’bout to get taken to a dreamworld of magic!

“Lazy Sunday’s” popularity effectively marked “Saturday Night Live’s” entry into the viral video age, and the venerable, 30-plus-year-old sketch comedy series proved unexpectedly ahead of the curve. “Lazy Sunday” led to countless imitators, including the Atlanta area’s own “Lazy Snellville.” Subsequent “SNL Digital Shorts” included Natalie Portman’s rap and “Dick in a Box.” Viral videos like these gave audiences a new destination for comedy on Youtube, and NBC’s (understandable) interest in controlling its creations led to the creation of Hulu as a Youtube alternative. It’s a surprise that it’s been two and a half years since “Lazy Sunday” appeared.

The question is, will Prince Caspian inspire a “Lazy Sunday” sequel? Steve Carell hosts the next new SNL episode on May 17.
