Cypress Hill knows how the work the crowd, whether its Lollopalooza or the SoCo Music Experience. Since they blazed on the scene in the early ‘90s with a tough, dark and ominous world of hard knocks and high times, the popular rap act has released a string of acclaimed albums, each with its own distinct sound. Their style strikes a universal chord with rap and metal fans alike, while depicting often-unsettling vignettes of alienation, tough streets and shady characters. Founder B-Real spoke with CL Music Editor Rodney Carmichael and Lee Valentine Smith just before they closed out Saturday night’s SCMX with a rousing set of fist-pumping anthems, including their massive hit “Insane In The Brain.”
Interview concludes with Cypress Hill’s track: “Dr. Greenthumb”.

The Atlanta-based Underground hip-hop collective Psyche Origami calls their music “head-change music,” but it spans both “conscious” and “party” tracks with a distinct style and message from the decidedly non-commercial side of the hip-hop mindset. From using a metaphorical gas station to playful and intense takes on the human condition, PO conveys a myriad of powerful themes. CL’s Music Editor Rodney Carmichael and Lee Valentine Smith chatted with the guys backstage at SCMX about the state of hip-hop and where to find it. Interview concludes with Psyche Origami’s track: “At Last.”

Sick Puppies have the distinction of being one of You Tube’s most-heard bands. Their song “All The Same†was featured in the popular Free Hugs video, shot by lead singer and guitarist Shimon Moore. A close-knit trio (there were a lot of trios at SCMX this year), the band recently relocated from their home in Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles. With the release of Dressed Up As Life last month, the band continues to produce a mighty roar of melodic pop with enough alt-abrasiveness to keep the kids happy, backed with intelligent lyrics that should appeal to adults. Shimon Moore, Emma Anzai and Mark Goodwin talked to Lee Valentine Smith after their abbreviated, thunderstorm-threatened set.
Interview concludes with Sick Puppies’ track: “All The Same.â€

Mickey Avalon is a whirling dervish of words and moves. His snake-hipped stage personae finds the wiry, Hollywood-based entertainer writhing through a series of sexy scenarios and sinewy grooves. His self-titled debut release on the new My Space Records label features the irresistible track “Jane Fonda.†Hear the tattooed Avalon talk about Jane Fonda - the actress, the song and the workout, his ink and much more with CL’s own Lee Valentine Smith.
Interview concludes with Mickey Avalon’s track: “Jane Fonda.â€

Rose Hill Drive kicked off the action on the main stage at Friday’s SoCo Music Experience. Hailing from Jam-friendly Colorado, the blues-rockin’ trio owes more to late ’60s stalwarts such as Cream or Blue Cheer. No strangers to Atlanta, the guys recoded their debut album at Southern Tracks with in-demand studio whiz Nick DiDia (Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine). Listen to RHD’s Jacob Sproul, Daniel Sproul and Nathan Barnes chat with CL’s Lee Valentine Smith shortly before their blistering set. Just as they concluded their late afternoon show, torrential downpour and ominous thunderstorms closed down the evening.
Interview concludes with Rose Hill Drive’s track: “Cool Codyâ€

Elevado is one of the bands to watch in the burgeoning East Atlanta music scene. Originally founded by cross-country songwriting collaborations, the band has habitated the hippest corners of Athens and Atlanta. While releasing a series of constantly-evolving and sonically challenging alternative pop music, the band has amassed a dedicated following while engaging in a number of amusing promotional stunts, such as a recent bus race. Their newest release, This World Is On Fire, will surely keep them on the road in their multi-colored, veggie-powered vehicle. Justin Sias and Eric Holder talked about the band with CL’s Lee Valentine Smith before they played the CL-sponsored side-stage.
Interview concludes with Elevado’s track: “Postcards From Four Walls Down.â€

It’s that time again. The festive Southern Comfort Music Experience returns to town this weekend. As SCMX-ATL unfolds, we’ll bring you the sights and sounds of the event with artist interviews, music, pictures and plenty of cool surprises. Look in this week’s issue of Creative Loafing for more details about the event:
Friday, May 11:
SOUTHERN COMFORT MUSIC EXPERIENCE — Tonight marks the return of SCMX, a free, two-day festival created by the liquor company to feature bands, food and (of course) liquid refreshment. And, since potent potables will be present (for a price), attendance is restricted to those over the legal drinking age of 21. This isn’t Music Midtown, buddy. It’s an interesting sampling of bands and entertainment with main stage acts including Wolfmother (9:30 p.m.), Mickey Avalon (8 p.m.) and Rose Hill Drive (6:30 p.m.). A second stage, co-sponsored by Creative Loafing, will offer a chance to sip a set from Elevado (6 p.m.), Collective Efforts (7:30 p.m.) and Pistolero (9 p.m.) between the main acts. Free. 5 p.m.- 11 p.m., Centennial Park. www.southerncomfort.com/scmxatl. — Lee Valentine Smith
Saturday, May 12:
SOUTHERN COMFORT MUSIC EXPERIENCE (SCMXATL) — The final night of the Southern Comfort Music Experience includes performances by Cypress Hill (9:30 p.m.), Galactic (7 p.m.), Sick Puppies (5:30 p.m.) and the Zac Brown Band (4 p.m.) on the main stage. The second stage, co-sponsored by your comfortably Southern friends here at Creative Loafing, pours a party mix of Coy Bowles (3:30 p.m.), Crane (5 p.m.), Gurufish (6:30 p.m.) and Psyche Oragami (9 p.m.). Free. 3 p.m. - 11 p.m., Centennial Park. www.southerncomfort.com/scmxatl. — LVS
