cypresshill1.jpgCypress Hill knows how the work the crowd, whether its Lollopalooza or the SoCo Music Experience. Since they blazed on the scene in the early ‘90s with a tough, dark and ominous world of hard knocks and high times, the popular rap act has released a string of acclaimed albums, each with its own distinct sound. Their style strikes a universal chord with rap and metal fans alike, while depicting often-unsettling vignettes of alienation, tough streets and shady characters. Founder B-Real spoke with CL Music Editor Rodney Carmichael and Lee Valentine Smith just before they closed out Saturday night’s SCMX with a rousing set of fist-pumping anthems, including their massive hit “Insane In The Brain.”

From using a metaphorical gas station to playful and intense takes on the human condition, PO conveys a myriad of powerful themes. CL’s Music Editor Rodney Carmichael and Lee Valentine Smith chatted with the guys backstage at SCMX about the state of hip-hop and where to find it. Their song “All The Same” was featured in the popular Free Hugs video, shot by lead singer and guitarist Shimon Moore. A close-knit trio (there were a lot of trios at SCMX this year), the band recently relocated from their home in Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles. With the release of Dressed Up As Life last month, the band continues to produce a mighty roar of melodic pop with enough alt-abrasiveness to keep the kids happy, backed with intelligent lyrics that should appeal to adults. Shimon Moore, Emma Anzai and Mark Goodwin talked to Lee Valentine Smith after their abbreviated, thunderstorm-threatened set.

Hailing from Jam-friendly Colorado, the blues-rockin’ trio owes more to late ’60s stalwarts such as Cream or Blue Cheer. No strangers to Atlanta, the guys recoded their debut album at Southern Tracks with in-demand studio whiz Nick DiDia (Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine). Listen to RHD’s Jacob Sproul, Daniel Sproul and Nathan Barnes chat with CL’s Lee Valentine Smith shortly before their blistering set. Just as they concluded their late afternoon show, torrential downpour and ominous thunderstorms closed down the evening.

Originally founded by cross-country songwriting collaborations, the band has habitated the hippest corners of Athens and Atlanta. While releasing a series of constantly-evolving and sonically challenging alternative pop music, the band has amassed a dedicated following while engaging in a number of amusing promotional stunts, such as a recent bus race. Their newest release, This World Is On Fire, will surely keep them on the road in their multi-colored, veggie-powered vehicle. Justin Sias and Eric Holder talked about the band with CL’s Lee Valentine Smith before they played the CL-sponsored side-stage.

Friday, May 11:
SOUTHERN COMFORT MUSIC EXPERIENCE — Tonight marks the return of SCMX, a free, two-day festival created by the liquor company to feature bands, food and (of course) liquid refreshment. And, since potent potables will be present (for a price), attendance is restricted to those over the legal drinking age of 21. This isn’t Music Midtown, buddy. It’s an interesting sampling of bands and entertainment with main stage acts including Wolfmother (9:30 p.m.), Mickey Avalon (8 p.m.) and Rose Hill Drive (6:30 p.m.). A second stage, co-sponsored by Creative Loafing, will offer a chance to sip a set from Elevado (6 p.m.), Collective Efforts (7:30 p.m.) and Pistolero (9 p.m.) between the main acts.
