The throngs of press, publicists and hangers-on could have filled a high school football stadium. But instead they were packed behind ropes and in designated areas.

Rubbing shoulders with stars while feigning disinterest is an art form that most in attendance Saturday seem to have perfected. The screams that occasionally came from outside the heavily-secured gates would lead one to think that being inside those gates is what some dreams are made of. But the reality, at least from this photographer’s point of view, is sadly more mundane — glittering and glossy as much of celebrity is, but tiring nonetheless.

The first two days of the DNC in Denver saw several different groups making their individual statements via wardrobe, signs, shouting, symbols and even torture demonstration.

Barack Obama supporters held bake sales as part of the “Hungry for Change” fundraising effort. Considering one group in southwest Atlanta raised $300 by 3 p.m., there’s an easy explanation why Obama opted out of the public campaign finance system earlier in the week. He’s got a finance system all his own. “Everybody’s showing up with $2, $3,” said volunteer Karen Ceesay at the Southwest Atlanta location, or “Swatts!,” as she called it.
