Get Ready for The Hold Steady

A rowdy roots-rock outfit led by one of the most expressive singers and gifted lyricists of his generation, the Springsteenian Craig Finn leads his band The Hold Steady through an impassioned reading of “Killer Parties†in this audience video clip from a packed Philly show last October, which finds jubilant concertgoers peacefully rejoicing alongside the musicians on stage.
The closing track off the band’s excellent 2004 debut album The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me, “Killer Parties†includes the now-legendary-around-these-parts line: “Ybor city is tres speedy but they throw such killer parties.â€

Is this Wade Tatengelo or the ghost of Scott Harrell writing this post. (I miss Smokey). Is liking the Hol Steady a prerequisite to being hired as a Creative Loafing critic?
There are times when I’m floored by the Hold Steady. The other times Craig Finn’s voice grates me. They are an easier band to respect than love. You Can Make Him Like You is a great song.

Interestingly, I have become a much bigger Hold Steady fan in the past year or so … Must be all the time I have spent at Scott’s old cubicle.
