Phish reunion(?) and other Sunday music links
June 22nd, 2008 by Wade Tatangelo in News
Phish reunion? Phor real? Anybody give a phuck? (Actually, this is pretty exciting news, especially for a large chunk of Creative Loafing’s editorial department. Let’s just hope this doesn’t inspire a similar move from those jamband hacks String Cheese Incident.)
- Michael Jackson touring? For real? Anybody give a f—? (From MTV.com.)
- New Order finished? For real? Anybody give a f—? (From Pitchfork.com).
- CL Political Editor Wayne Garcia reports “Vicki Santa steps down at WMNF.”
- Blac Soap to open for Flo Rida June 28 at Club 360 in Ybor City. Look for my Blac Soap interview in the CL hitting newsstands June 25.
- Lil Wayne rules. Los Angeles Times explains why.
- U2 remasters first three albums. Do I detect a healthy whiff of irony in the CMJ headline “Oh, Boy!”
- Really, more Ryan Adams songs should be under 2 minutes long (Aquarium Drunkard).
- The Chicago Reader (aka Creative Loafing Chicago) dares to ask “Oh yeah, chicks play guitar too, don’t they?”
- Billboard reports Bruce Springtseen to extend tour, play Hershey, PA, which means it’s time for me to visit my hometown, aka “The Sweetest Place on Earth.”
- I’m totally feeling Sean Daly’s blog post, “Brother, Can You Spare a Song?”

“hacks” ? As if anyone in the dirty south knows anything about SCI, or music in general. Maybe when you get done beating your wife and hanging people from what little trees remain in your godawful state some Colorado boys can show you how to stand up when you piss.

That’s right, Colorado doesn’t have any crazies.
Go drink another Fat Tire (something I wish I could do right now) and rethink your comment, Ryan.

Actually I do care if Michael Jackson tours again. I bet millions of people give a phuck.
June 22nd, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Danielle: Don’t get me wrong, I do give a phuck if MJ is touring and will be there at moment’s notice if he plays Tampa.

wade,
the new order break up is old news, it happened, according to hooky, over a year ago. and, i gave a fuck. bernie still seems to think that new order is not broken up, but without hooky, there is no new order.
ryan,
we in the south know that SCI sucks. i bet you like OAR, too? they suck even worse than SCI. and phish… well, i think they suck, too. but i’m sure that you think what i listen to sucks, and thats cool. you don’t have to post BS about wife beating and hanging folks… i mean, i didn’t call you out as hacky-sack playing, blueberry-flavored weed smoking, trustafarian who’s blowing his neo-con parents’ money while failing out of film school (or whatever classes yr too stoned to show up for). oh, did i type that… maybe you need to smoke some more weed and relax, dude. you seem a bit angry for a fake hippie.

Can’t we have more meaningful dialogue than saying something sucks? I mean, for real, guys. I’m not a fan of SCI either — too bluegrassy, vocals too hoakey for my taste, not into hoola hoops — but I appreciate the fact that the band has some talented musicians, they have some hot jams, and at the right time and place (say, driving through the mountains in Colorado), it’s all right. See how it’s done — I expressed an opinion of personal dislike for a band without saying they sucked even once.
Wade — The rumor about Phish is an old one and not suprising to any of us who pay attention to the band. (They don’t suck either. Anyone who likes the Allman Brothers is not allowed to comment.) In an interview a few weeks ago with Tom Marshall (longitme Phish songwriter), Marshall said that he and Trey [Anastasio of Phish] had been writing a bunch of songs. So most of us figure it’s just a matter of time. Plus, Trey’s gotta be in need of some $$ by now, what with all the legal costs to stay out of a long jail sentence.
Ryan — wow, dude. Don’t you know that Florida is not, technically, the South? We are a whole different alien region of bizzarity. Even Fark thinks so!

Leilani: Really? Has your I.D. been hijacked? Defending String Cheese Incident? What third-rate jam band band will you defend next? moe ;)
Times are tough and time is limited: String Cheese incident doesn’t deserve “more meaningful dialogue” than the band sucks.
The rumor about Phish reuniting might be old news to Phishheads but to the rest of society it’s rather new:

“Anyone who likes the Allman Brothers is not allowed to comment.” OK, I’ll take the bait: Being a Phish fan and not recognizing the genius of Duane-era ABB is like touting Britney Spears over Madonna.
Discuss.

Wade, I think Leilani is talking about intelligent conversation.
You know, actually having knowledge about the subject you’re discussing…
Oh right, you don’t know ;)

ok, SCI might know how to play their instruments, but they write horrible “songs”. i say a lot of bands suck; but, as with SCI, they might be great players, but i still think they suck. you know who else sucks? slipknot. in all honesty, they can play the fuck out of their instruments, really. but they still suck.

Wade, like I said — meaningful dialogue. Something you are still not offering on the subject at hand. Thanks for proving my point, appreciate it!
And Billboard links to an article that’s over two weeks old, and one that’s on Jamtopia, for goodness sakes. Although, honestly, I can’t blame you for Billboard being stupid.
We will not get into the ABB discussion. I never said I didnt recognize the “genius” of Duane-era ABB. Suffice to say that ABB stopped doing anything original after Duane died. They’re still jamming on the same songs from 1972. Yes, ABB, Grateful Dead, Led Zepplin and all those classic bands broke ground. Obviously. But Phish took that ground and dug a hole to China.

i am all about a phish reunion, if they only play all new stuff in the ’surrender to the air’ vein. that should keep some of those pretty boys at bay.
and for the record, pretty much all of those second (and third) tier jamblands do suck. well, at least without drugs.
(and for the moe.ron’s - my capshaw code is ’spine’) - its like my computer knows.

oh, and i would definately see a michael jackson gig, but i would prefer to see it like the prince gigs in vegas. tight, hit focused dance parties, with some of the early MJ glam. i am not really a fan of the current mutant scary MJ.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:00 pm
The current mutant MJ is all there is now, my dear. (Sigh.) Wish that dude would get his shit together.

“you know who else sucks? slipknot. in all honesty, they can play the fuck out of their instruments, really. but they still suck.”
The whole state of Iowa is angry at you now.

I met MJ when I was working as a clown at the now extinct theme park Circus World. He used to book the entire park for him and 2 or 3 little kids. Of course, that was back when he had some semblance of a nose and he was brown. He only agreed to speak to the clowns and only if we were in full makeup. I had been
talking to him for about 2 or 3 minutes before I realized he hadn’t blinked once. I was half tempted to whip off my wig and scare the bejesus out of him.
