Guitar Hero: Beatles?

June 23rd, 2008 by Anthony Salveggi in News

Well, here’s an interesting bit of news on a potential Beatles/video game mash-up:

Publishers Activision and MTV Games are courting representatives of the Beatles to license the wildly popular band’s catalog for use in their respective rhythm franchises Guitar Hero and Rock Band, the Financial Times reports.

According to the report, both publishers have held discussions with representatives of the band concerning a “Beatles-themed video game.”

So what’s your call? Are the Beatles too sacrosanct to be involved in this kind of deal, or is there no shame in following the money?

    Let’s see…

Beatles songs can be found on ads for Target and Luvs, Michael Jackson/Sony is looking for more buyers, and American Idol was given permission to use the catalog.

I think that ship has sailed.

If Neil Asphinal was still alive and in charge of Apple Corp LTD — none of this would be happening as Neil strictly controlled the “Beatle Myth” as Lennon used to call it.

Hard on the fans but a marketing goldmine.

But with Neil gone, the legacy of the Beatles won’t be strictly managed. No, it’s going mainstream or they are trying to at least.

Don’t forget the rumors that the Beatle recordings are supposedly imminent on iTunes as well as a Beatles flavored iPod.

I think it would be great. A good way to keep the Beatles’ music familiar with a new generations. Maybe some young kids that would otherwise turn their nose up at Beatles “oldies” might see how cool and hip these songs really are. Plus as a longtime Beatles fan and video game fan, I would absolutely love to play a Beatles themed guitar hero game, especially the bass parts.
