Metallica, Jeff Beck, Stooges up for RR HOF

September 23rd, 2008 by Wade Tatangelo in News, Self-indulgent musings

229715834_m.jpgThe Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees has been announced. I know, to many people out there, the RR HOF has all the relevance of a dinosaur exhibit. To others, it’s still fun to debate who deserves entrance. Here’s the list of nine. Five make it.

(By the way, as I type this, I’m watching the Today Show being shot at the University of Tampa. The roly poly again Al Roker is trying to get to the bottom of a Cuban Sandwich. Funny stuff.)

From Smoking Section:

The nine artists on the RR HOF ballot are:

Jeff Beck

Wanda Jackson

Bobby Womack

The Stooges

War

Metallica

Run-D.M.C

Chic

Little Anthony and the Imperials

If I had a ballot to submit I’d go with original guitar hero Jeff Beck, thrash gods Metallica, rap pioneers Run-D.M.C. and proto-punk monsters The Stooges. Rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson just barely beats out R&B great (and “It’s All Over Now” author) Bobby Womack.

“I Wanna Be Your Dog,” Iggy Pop and The Stooges (2004)

You’re really giving short shrift to Little Anthony and the Imperials.

I love Wanda Jackson. Wasn’t it Elvis that convinced her to switch up from country to her rockabilly sound?

  3. Wade Tatangelo Says:

Kellie: Yep, good call. Jackson and Elvis were lovers at the time. At least that’s how the story goes.

    From Wikipedia:

“[Jackson] dated Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to step away from the country-tinged gospel she had been performing since childhood and try her hand at rock and roll.”

the whole thing is a joke, but it’s nice when a band as deserving as any, like the stooges, finally gets recognized by someone for being an important contributor and influence on today’s music. but alas, there are plenty of bands that have had just as much (or more) musical influence and relevance that will never be recognized by the RRHOF; yet somehow, as soon as the dave matthews band is eligible, they’ll get voted in.
