Aretha Franklin, Wilco, Erykah Badu headline New Orleans Jazz Fest

December 16th, 2008 by Wade Tatangelo in News

My favorite yearly music bash, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest, just announced its lineup for 2009 and I’m stoked about Aretha Franklin headlining the second weekend, April 30-May 3, which I annually attend. I’ve never seen the Queen of Soul and can’t imagine a better place than the Big Easy for it to finally happen.

Other acts on my must-see list for that weekend include Tony Bennett, The Neville Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Common, Emmylou Harris (huge fan, never seen her before), Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Los Lobos, Toots & the Maytals, Allen Toussaint, John Mayall (he’s pretty cool live), Solomon Burke, Doc Watson, Jakob Dylan (more out of curiosity), Chuck Brown, Guy Clark, Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm.

Check out some of my Jazz Fest coverage from last year.

Soul Rebels, which I wrote about last year while at Jazz Fest, and other killer New Orleans acts after the jump.

The Crescent City acts I plan to squeeze into my schedule during the weekend: Soul Rebels, Radiators Aaron Neville, Tab Benoit & the Wetland Allstars, Ellis Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Walter “Wolfman” Washington & the Roadmasters, the subdudes, Irvin Mayfield & the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Bonerama.

I’m not seeing the Midnite Disturbers on your list of must sees. Trust me, add them. All-star brass band put together by Stanton Moore (Galactic); you’ll get Trombone Shorty, Skerik, Mark Mullins, Big Sam, and more. They played 1st weekend last year, in a downpour at the small Jazz and Heritage stage. Highlight of the fest for many–me included.

Also check out Bobby Lounge, John Boutte, Eddie Bo. And you’ve got to at least do a walk-by to see what Theresa Andersson is wearing.

I’m going second weekend too; missing out on Drive By Truckers with Booker T. Jones as well as Kinky.

Good work, thanks! My sister received the Mbt shoes I bought her for her birthday, she adores them. I was a little worried the calf would be tight around her legs but it hasn’t been a problem. I’ll be back before Christmas.

There is nothing that touches these for just lazing around at home. Bar sleeping I don’t take mine off now that its getting colder, they are not quite as stiff as they were when they first arrived but still extremely comfortable. It would be nice if they had a little more arch support but other than that I’m very pleased. I am finding a nice mbt shoes!
