Hankshaw & Friends

The annual New Granada Christmas Show at New World Brewery featuring King of Spain, Davey von Bohlen, Hankshaw and Jarvik 7 was a splendid night of reunions with a grand soundtrack.  The show has a reputation for unique elements (including in past years the reunions of Scrog, Pohgoh and appearances by elusive bands like The Blackwoods Orchestra) and it’s a place to meet up with friends from near and far.

King of Spain…

King of Spain’s Matt Slate perfomed with Gabe Lowenberg which provided a new presence for King of Spain… keep a look out for some new recordings of the new songs that are being distributed via the King of Spain e-newsletter to tide you over to their next show!

Davey von Bohlen

Seeing Davey von Bohlen perform a solo set at New World Brewery was an awesome christmas present for Tampa and particularly for indie rockers of a certain age.  Davey has an impressive music lineage including 90’s emo darlings Cap’n Jazz, The Promise Ring, Vermont – and more recently, Maritime.  The Promise Ring famously bridged the gap from hardcore to indie rock for a generation of punk rock kids and much has been written about the band.  For those scholars out there, The Promise Ring’s second record “Nothing Feels Good” was used as the title for a book on the genre that is an interesting look at this transition.  Davey’s set was the model of interactive, audience participation with audience members filling in the words when Davey forgot a few.

Hankshaw

Hankshaw’s set was a perfect balance of old and new – my only complaint is the set was too short. Hankshaw and its members have been staples of the Tampa music scene for more than a decade and the many friends they have made over the years were out in force to support the band.  Who can forget Lazy Susan’s sets at Blue Chair in 1993 when Harold would lead the audience on a trip around the block?  I hope we will see a lot more of Hankshaw in the coming months.

Jarvik 7

I enjoyed Jarvik 7’s performance because not only was the music great as usual but their light show added an extra ambient element.

Good work, thanks! My sister received the Mbt shoes I bought her for her birthday, she adores them. I was a little worried the calf would be tight around her legs but it hasn’t been a problem. I’ll be back before Christmas.
