The TENORI-ON: You can own one for only $999

January 12th, 2009 by Leilani Polk in News

Last week, while writing about the BBC’s number one pick for its ‘Sound of 2009′ artists to watch in the New Year countdown, I discovered a (somewhat) new digital musical instrument, the TENORI-ON, one among many 21st Century music-producing gadgets.

First launched in 2007 and improved bit by bit since then, the TENORI-ON is the result of a collaboration between media artist Toshio Iwai and Yamaha. One part instrument, one part visually appealing performance tool, the TENORI-ON works like a high-tech synthesizer with a visible music interface. Its 16 x 16 matrix of LED buttons can be both played and watched; DJs and producers can use MIDI and load the instrument with their own samples, both operating and interacting with the LED buttons and the light they produce.

See video of Tortoise, I am Robot and Proud, Mouse on Mars and Battles using the TENORI-ON after the jump.
