Review (with tons of photos): Country legend Charlie Louvin
March 31st, 2009 by elawgrrl in Concerts, Local Music, Photo review, Photos, ReviewsIt’s not every day we’re lucky enough to see a veritable folk legend at New World Brewery — especially not one with a career as illustrious as Country Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin. On Friday, Mr. Louvin and his band graced New World Brewery with a special performance. At 82, Mr. Louvin tours regularly, releases new records and continues to inspire a new generation of musicians. He effortlessly connects with an all-ages audience by weaving stories and running commentary in between songs in a manner that most musicians can’t even dream of pulling off. Most of us can only dream of being this cool at any point in our lives — let alone at 82.
Fun Facts: Elvis Presley opened up for the Louvin Brothers before making it big. Mr. Louvin had a memorable meeting with a young Johnny Cash that involved soda crackers. Also, Mr. Louvin’s son is touring with him (he is the acoustic guitar player below).
Will Quinlan & The Diviners, Tampa Bay alt-country favorites, opened up for Mr. Louvin, joining an illustrious list of musicians to have shared his stage.
It is a testament to the strength of the Tampa Bay music scene that the Dviners lineup changes frequently, adding new subtle twists to old favorites. Navasota is their current CD and if you haven’t heard it, you are overdue for jumping on this bandwagon!
On this evening, The Diviners were comprised of Soraya Zaumeyer (vocals), Brian Lane (upright bass), Alex Spoto (fiddle/guitar), and Jeff Jones (mandolin).
Special thanks to Keith Ulrey of New Granada Presents for setting up such a unique performance.

This was a really great show. First time I think I’ve heard them play sans drums. Louvin was a real treat, too. They were at the bar at like 5 that night for a 10pm show. This was certainly one of those shows – very much like Granada’s Cristabel and the Jons/Two Man Gentlmen Band show – that really makes New World such a special spot. Keep em coming, Keith!
