Bay Area Beat presents Adrianne w/Francilla Two stylistically contrasting artists take to the acoustically impeccable Pro Star Sound Stage. Adrianne (pictured), who claims Atlanta and Los Angeles as bases, is a singer/songwriter who favors cozy melodies and spacey arrangements often built around acoustic guitar. Francilla — Tampa by way of the Virgin Islands — has a more beat-oriented dance sound, although it seems unlikely that the show will turn into a rave. Arturo Sandoval A predominant figure on the Cuban jazz scene, Sandoval formed Irakere with Chucho Valdes and Paquito D’Rivera, and was mentored by Dizzy Gillespie in the U.S. His post-bop trumpet style is also spiced by flavors of his homeland, where he still resides. Sandoval is a gregarious performer who knows how to please a crowd. Fri., April 24, 2 and 8 p.m., Largo Cultural Center, Largo, $30 in advance/$35 dos. —ES

Dead Confederate w/Summerbirds in the Cellar/The Beauvilles The latest Athens buzz band is Dead Confederate, a newish psychedelic Southern grunge five-piece with a sound marked by much heavy reverb, growling-gritty vocals and slow, brooding moments of darkness. The band released its full-length debut, Wrecking Ball, last September. Fri., April 24, 9 p.m., Crowbar, Ybor City, $9 (18 and up). —LP

Saturday, April 25
Gliss w/Lady Fair/Mogul Street Reserve L.A.-based indie rock trio Gliss (pictured) have toured with Billy Corgan, The Ravonettes, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, to name a few, their sound morphing over the years from dark, atmospheric shoegaze to the more recent fuzzed-out psychedelic rock found on its April release, Devotion Implosion. The album is a strong sophomore effort marked by languid, hypnotizingly husky vocals, reverb- and distortion-saturated walls of sound, and the occasional amble into dream time. The John Henrys w/The Mojo Gurus/Dank Ottawa-based quintet The John Henrys has an agreeably languid alt-country sound. They’re a nice pairing with the Mojo Gurus, a locally based band that brings a more amplified, manic vibe. Sat., April 25, 9:30 p.m., Dave’s Aqua Lounge, St. Petersburg, $7. —ES

Jammin’ in the Harbor w/Pinehill/Los Hijos de Ismael/The Basiqs/16 Second Stare/60’s Groove/The Dollyrots/Jason Miller/Barry Harris/Holes and Hearts/Rolling Stone Tribute Band This day-long celebration of live music includes everything from rock to hip hop, R&B and even a mariachi band. A Kid Zone includes a bounce house, face painting and visits from Scooby Doo, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob and more. A portion of proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Pinellas. Steve Kimock Crazy Engine He’s not always the most engaging showman, but there’s no doubting Steve Kimock’s musicianship — the dude’s got some major guitar chops and in certain circles the 53-year-old veteran axeman is considered among America’s best. His current touring project, Crazy Engine (pictured), fuses rock, rhythm & blues, gospel and soul, and features Hammond B3 player Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), bassist Janis Wallin (Family Groove Company) Kimock’s own son, John Morgan Kimock, on drums, and soulful vocalists Cheryl Rucker and Shirley Starks. 620 Gospel Brunch A series of “High Five” events to celebrate the Studio@620’s fifth anniversary kick off with this gospel brunch at the Studio and co-hosted by the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum. Guests are encouraged to don their best hats and enjoy the brunch by Sofia Forte’s Catering in the museum’s gardens as well as live gospel music and performances from artists like Sharon Scott, Aleshea Harris, Dundu Dole Urban African Ballet, Unity A Cappella Gospel Ensemble and many others. Jeff Black Underground Nashville-based roots rockin’ multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Jeff Black has recorded with Iris Dement and Jeff Tweedy, and counts among his fans Sam Bush (who played on Black’s ’05 album) and Waylon Jennings (who covered Black’s “Carnival Song”). His music has a wholesome, genuine quality not unlike early Springsteen or Bob Seger. This show was previously incorrectly listed as taking place on Friday.
