Phish Saves America: Save the Date is NOT in California!

Phish is not lame and did not drop all the most obvious hints about the location of the upcoming “Save the Date” fest so we could figure it out with little or no detective work. They led us all down a false trail, encouraging speculation and spreading rumors so thick and detailed that pretty much everybody and their brothers were convinced that the fest would be held at the Coachella site in Indio, California, also a city known for its date farms. (By date, I mean the fruit.) The rumors seemed so solid that hundreds (including a CL staffer, not myself), booked rooms in the Indio area.
Throughout the past several weeks, to hype up the forthcoming festival set to occur in a mystery location Oct. 30-Nov. 1, Phish anchored their homepage with an interactive pic of the United States, with various flash disasters — swarms of hungry ants, gods blowing storms in from the heavens, even Mike riding doomfully across the country on his Segway — to remove the possibilities state by state. California was still on the map up until today, when it was hijacked by four hot air balloons, casting all previous speculation into the dirt.
My original theory, since Nevada is still on the map, that Phish has decided to take over Vegoose and will either be the headliner on a bill of bands, or the sole band. Vegose is a Halloweentime fest. I guess only time will tell — but you heard the theory here first!

i like the vegas idea (it was after all on the short list of possible sites)… but there are a couple of other theories that are still floating around.

Pete, you are so on the money. I, too, am sick of the headier-than-thous who think they know all the shiz. Although, maybe the hot air balloons will drop California back on the map, in the end. Maybe with some sort of grand deflating?

if you zoom the page in to 200%, CA is still there, suspended above the us by those four ballons. fairly sure that it’s gonna fall down in the end.

Or, much like the poor flash design that has preceded this one, the designer simply moved the state of California off of his active stage, but just failed to remove it at the end. This happens all the time, most people are not zooming all the way out of the page they are on though, so simply never notice it. I have a feeling as soon as they realize you can still see it, it will be corrected like earlier mistakes.

I like how phish is playing these games an what not, but i booked a hotel in Cali for this an i will gladly get rid of it, an want to because i dont want this festival in Cali. I would like to see it in the hometown of phish in the eastcoast somewhere. Im going to get rid of my hotel room and really really hope that they dont bring back cali because that will be very upsetting

This just in, I have spoken with the people at the Polo grounds who are now confirming that Phish will not be playing their for the three day halloween festival.

ok so we al know that if you press command + then you can see CA hovering in the sky.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM RED BALOON IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S HOVERING OVER INDIO, CA.
The next one looks like its over bakesfield, the blue one is over San Francisco, and the Green balloon is over somewhere way up in NorCal.
My theory is that after all the other states are gone the balloons will drop CA back on the map, the top three balloons will break away and the RED balloon will land in Indio CA and the boys will walk out onto the stage!

the fact that hot air ballons carried off California makes me wonder if it’ll be held in New Mexico. Albuquerque has the worlds largst hot air balloon festival every year….in Ocotber.

I don’t understand your headline and the premise of the article. Did Phish ever say that if a state isn’t on the map, the festival won’t be there?
Has there ever been any instructions given by the band?
“Save The Date is NOT in California” – You’re so sure it won’t be in California based on a Flash animation that you’re presenting it to your readers as a fact?

The balloons will drop after all states have disappeared and it will be in Indio folks..I love the hate for Cali though and how excited people are that think its still not there. EPIC fail on the writers behalf hahahha.

As Late to the Party has already pointed out, twice, you obviously have never worked with flash and don’t understand how it works.
Paul — I appreciate your pointing out the possibly-not-correct headline. As far as I can tell, and based on the entire idea of this flash animation — states being removed to rule them out as locations for the fest — Cali is OUT.
Savethedate — “Epic Fail”? Really? Let me guess — you’re a regular on Phantasytour and you’re known for making grand and epic statements that generally make you look like an asshole. Congrats — you’ve managed the feat here, too.
TO ALL: As I’ve commented previously (see above, about seven comments down), I have not entirely ruled out the idea that the hot air balloons could potentially drop California back on the map, in the end. Who knows, with Phish. IF that happens, I’ll be even more thrilled. Means they are the band I think they are.
And if/as soon as Cali is confirmed, I’ll write a new post. It will have a headline something to the effect of, “Phish Saves America: Save the Date IS in Cali!”

the examples cited of Phish “messing” with fans were pretty sad – small jokes, not major fooling. I fail to see how teasing a Zep song for 1 second or saying Bruce Springsteen will come out and then five dseconds later you realize itsnot true just aint the same s folling fans into believing a festival is in one state. sorry.
furthermore, why would phish announce to 95% percent of their fans that this fast was not in Cali and let the 5% of insiders know. That would really upset a majority of their fans base (95% which is not on PT)

@davey I agree. Please will you folks stop singing along at the shows. Even at the Fabulous Fox when they came out and sang Star Spangled Banner, Yes it was funny, But no i do not want to hear two assholes singing it over the band. I can’t remember the singing along ever being this bad.

sorry – I just wrote too quickly.
My point was that Phish would not try to fool 95% of their fanbase to appease those “already in the know”…in other words, the average Phish fan does not spend 12 hours a day on PT so they see the Phish website and assume based on how the game has played out to this point that Cali is out. Its just logic. And the insiders seem to think the joke is on everyone else. Maybe there was no joke, just that Indio fell through. I dont know, but I feel that the map is telling me California is gone. If I am such a fool, so be it, but If I had said last week that God “saving” Tennessee” meant that he would blow it back in eventually I would have been laughed out of the room (chat)…now the Cali or die folks are using this kind of logic ( dude- it will float back in!) –
NO – all the ballons represent is that the Indio rumor was nothing more than HOT AIR

I think Cali isn’t happening. Sure they might bring it back in the end, which would be cool, but probably not. Do you guys really think Phish would make it that easy to figure out? UM NO. Its going to be somewhere no one could have ever expected, somewhere warm, somewhere they have never played possibly, and a state that has plenty of rural areas perfect for this phestival. My money goes on Mississippi. Go ahead and make fun now, but it is a distinct possibility.
