A collection of some of his greatest works to date. I Roy (born Roy Reid) worked as an accountant for the government in the mid-60s, during this time he saw DJing as more of a hobby. Due to the rise in popularity of DJs in the late-60s he established and operated Turbo Sonic Sound. He then started to take the business more seriously and went on to record a string of hits with various producers of the time. Bunny Lee, one of Jamaica’s finest producers, produced some of I Roy’s most popular tracks, which we have right here on one big album. All tracks recorded and mixed at King Tubby’s Studio.

Brought straight to your desktops by Lee at Vinyl Fever.
VINYL:
AA Bondy – American Hearts
Their latest (2008) release, now available on vinyl.
Amon Duul II – Yeti
“Yeti” was the second album by Amon Duul II and is quite a musical achievement. This is a double LP set and contains some of Amon Duul’s most impressive work – delivering their thick, full-fledged, multi-layered sound with dense instrumentation and a certain epic vastness. This is Krautrock in the full depth of its power: huge, towering, dark and completely devoid of any happy optimism, but still bound full of energy. An essential bit of the psych/prog era. Released with the original artwork.
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
Deluxe reissue features the original album remastered and a bonus disc of 12 rarities, live tracks and B-sides.
David Bowie – Man Who Sold The World
David Bowie – Pinups
High-end Simply Vinyl label pressings.
The Clash – The Clash
The Clash – Give ‘Em Enough Rope
The Clash – Combat Rock
High-end Simply Vinyl label pressings.
The Dead Weather – Horehound
The latest musical adventure by Jack White epitomizes the alt-rock ethic: do the music you love, do it yourself, and do it fast. The Dead Weather brings together lead singer Alison Mosshart (half of the London-based lo-fi post-punk duo The Kills), Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, The Raconteurs’ bassist Jack Lawrence, and White on drums and vocals.
Iggy & The Stooges – More Power
Digitally remastered collection of rare studio recordings from the Raw Power era.
Son Volt – American Central Dust

Budos Band – Budos Band EP
One of the most exciting of the Daptone label bands is The Budos Band, and they’re whetting our appetite for the upcoming Budos Band III full-length with this vinyl-only EP that gives the trademark horn-driven and bass-heavy Budos funk another slot in your collection. Vinyl:
Fugazi – 3 Songs (7″)
Originally recorded in 1989.
Levon Helm – Electric Dirt
Electric Dirt again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land and those who live by it, but this record goes deeper and wider, incorporating gospel, blues and soul elements in a bracing collection of originals and carefully chosen outside songs.
Wilco – Wilco (The Album) LP+CD
Wilco’s seventh combines the intimacy of its previous studio disc, Sky Blue Sky, with the experimentation of A Ghost Is Born in a set that boasts strong melodies and often unabashedly pop arrangements. LP includes the album on a CD.

Vinyl only release. Radio Live is comprised of two tracks from a live radio broadcast on KFJC (12/31/07) and two tracks from a live performance in Vienna on their 2008 European tour.
God Help The Girl - God Help The Girl
After the success of Belle And Sebastian’s most recent album, The Life Pursuit, band leader/singer/songwriter Stuart Murdoch decided to pursue the writing of a rock musical scored for female singers. After auditioning vocalists via Internet contests, he made his choices and, with all members of Belle And Sebastian backing him up, recorded this record. It combines the strengths of early Belle And Sebastian records in a broader musical palette, drawing equally on musicals, ‘60s girl groups, ‘80s indie, and classic pop. LP includes MP3 download.

Dad’s dig music. I’m a dad, and if I didn’t work at THEE record store (and already have them), these’d be on my Father’s Day list:
Booker T – Potato Hole
This album has it ALL. The funky soul of classic Booker T, rocking guitar of Neil Young and it grooves to the backing of the Drive-By Truckers, poignantly tying together the fact that Patterson Hood’s father, as a Muscle Shoals studio musician, was an integral part of the southern soul sound, that Booker T. spawned. See how this Father’s Day gift has several levels to it?!
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott – A Stranger Here
This is an album of blues covers. I thought I never needed to hear some of these songs again (they’d been covered SO much!), but they’ve absolutely been made fresh by Jack’s gut-bucket voice, the
musicianship of Van Dyke Parks and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and Joe Henry’s production.
From the liner notes of A Stranger Here, Henry writes: “I pitched the idea that he interpret country blues music from the Depression era of his birth… songs as dark, funny and strange as is he and the times that produced them, and also ones that still resonate in these turbulent days.” It’s amazing how someone nearly 80 years old can interpret these aged classics in such a contemporary manner. I guess that’s why we call them “artists.”

A Rant by Gabe
MOTOWN JUNK
… is the title of one of the earliest releases by Manic Street Preachers. That single was released way before the angry young Welsh band were even close to ever releasing a full-length album. The song is basically an observation of how obsessed we as a culture are with nostalgia.
We revel in the “Glory Days” (another song with a similar theme) and spend countless hours talking about how GREAT the “good old days” were. The irony is that although we were complete fuck-ups, douchebags and nerds, we still somehow only remember how young, hell-raising, wild and crazy we were. Selective memory, if you ask me.
This type of fond remembrance is great but it has its limitations. Such is the case with the warm fuzzy feeling that most people have for bands like Cheap Trick and The Ramones.
Undoubtedly these are two of my all-time favorite bands that I consider myself very lucky to have seen live many, many times. Both influenced thousands of bands who came after them and eventually eclipsed them both in terms of record sales and popularity. Thing is, both bands continued to create solid, respectable music throughout their respective careers.
Hell, Cheap Trick’s last record, Rockford, rocks as hard as anything they’ve ever released! Problem is the folks who go see these bands nowadays only want to hear “the old stuff.”
A chance to grab from the Vinyl Fever swag bag after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

By Vinyl Fever’s Gabe Echazabal
A young music lover whose taste I respect and admire told me something shocking the other day. The kid is in his late teens and listens to some pretty cool stuff — vintage

Bowie, freaked-out Zappa and some other worthwhile contemporary artists as well. I see myself in this person … when I was 18. I couldn’t get enough music. I read about it, listened to it, tried to play it … You get the idea.
We were talking music in the aisles of Vinyl Fever and he asked me for some suggestions. Everything came to a screeching halt when, totally unprovoked, he told me he did NOT want anything by the Ramones. My jaw was still mid-drop when he twisted the knife in my soul a little deeper. “All their music sounds the same!” he announced. I don’t know if I was more shocked, saddened or confused. I mean, I just assumed, based on his level of music knowledge, that he’d already been converted to the clan from Queens. I felt like he was cheating himself out of a vital part of his adolescence by denouncing the “bruddahs” who fueled the passion and fire for music for so many teenage boys (and lots of girls too) for so long. It was as if he were telling me that he hated candy, cartoons and videogames, too.

Vinyl Fever is part of a coalition of about 30 other stores like ours all across the country. It has improved the kind of attention we get from record labels (like all the free samplers and 7″ers we get on such a regular basis, and more access to bands for in-stores). The best part of it is that we share ideas amongst ourselves without concern about sharing secrets, like there’d be if we were actual competitors. With all the hoopla that has taken place in the music industry the past 10 years, it has been quite a saving grace and we’ve made some great friends with some of the best damn record stores in the U.S.
What I love most about this alliance is when the conversations and ideas move beyond music industry junk and into a more universal realm.

NEW RELEASES in VINYL:
Akron/Family – Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free
Their musical vocabulary runs deep – it’s not just Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, and The Grateful Dead that inform this record; the band feels at home and self-assured. With limited outside assistance, the trio has made a focused, powerful and unified work. This is the new psychedelic rock.
Beastie Boys – Check Your Head 4LP BOX
An ultra-deluxe 4 LP 180HQ vinyl version packaged in a fabric-wrapped hardcover coffee table book case and limited to 2000 copies.
Chimaira – The Infection Picture Disc
Elvis Costello – Complicated Shadows b/w Dirty Rotten Shame 7″
Looks really cool and retro. “Complicated Shadows” is on the album but the flip side, “Dirty Rotten Shame” is an exclusive song for this piece. This was supposed to be out for Record Store Day, but production was delayed.
Fleet Foxes 7” – Mykonos b/w False Knight On the Road
“Mykonos” is the centerpiece of the Sun Giant EP released last spring and included with the popular vinyl version of the band’s debut, Fleet Foxes. Beautifully packaged in a gatefold sleeve, the single is backed with a previously unreleased cover of the traditional folk ballad “False Knight On The Road,” made popular by Steeleye Span and Richard Thompson.
The Horrors – Primary Colours
Their debut, Strange House, was as controversial as it was celebrated, landing them on the cover of NME in their native England. Produced by Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and noted video director Chris Cunningham (Aphex Twin, Bjork). ‘
‘Genuinely, gloriously deranged.” –The Onion
Killing Joke:
• Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
• Fire Dances
• Killing Joke
• Night Time
• Outside The Gate
• Revelations
• What’s This For?
Limited edition 2-LP sets.
Mastodon – Crack The Skye
Finally on vinyl! Regular and limited, double 45-RPM deluxe edition.
Bob Mould – Life and Times
Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band – Outer South
While touring in support of last year’s debut, Conor Oberst, Conor and the Mystic Valley Band began writing new songs. The result is the first album credited to this group. Oberst’s songwriting and delivery remain an engaging presence, but the addition of songs by Taylor Hollingsworth, Nik Freitas, and Jason Boesel make for a multi-textured and colorful collaboration. The Mystic Valley Band also includes Macey Taylor and Nathaniel Walcott.

Promotional e-mail of the day. (Rarely are they so entertaining and ON!, so we thought we’d share.)
From World’s Fair Label Group:
Retail,
Sharon played the Dark Was The Night show at Radio City last night and totally killed it! She also stole the encore by taking the boring song “This Land Is Your Land” that was being played boringly by a bunch of indie rock bands that sounded like they were on the verge of falling asleep mid song, and being like, “no no no!” and showin ‘em how to do it right! Yes! Thank you Sharon! You can watch her swoop in and rescue that encore like a super hero here:

This post comes from Vinyl Feverite Gabe Echazabal, a first-time blogger to Tampa Calling.
These are strange times we’re living in. We’re having to battle swine flu, an atrocious economy, and teachers playing naughty with our kids. However, the thing I CAN’T seem to fathom is the weird and bizarre ways that folks are behaving at rock concerts.
Sure, you always had your concertgoers who were too high, too drunk or too out of key when they crowed along with the singer on stage. Those types of disruptions I’ve learned to tolerate. As a matter of fact, I’d welcome them if they were all I had to deal with at a rock show these days. However, what goes on now is not only obnoxious, it’s just plain inane.
