Nine little questions for Geri-X

What do you really know about Geri-X?

She is a singer/songwriter whose band is also named Geri X. They’re based in St. Petersburg. Why am I asking her nine questions? Well, primarily because I’ve had her CD playing in my car for a couple of months now and I think you should know more about her & it. This is a local group that doesn’t sound local, they sound beyond this place, and beyond all the places of their past. Their latest album is called “Anthems of a Mended Heart.”

I imagine that for Geri, this album is something of a destination. The exhalation of a breath held too long, the sigh of relief at the end of a storm. It seems like she has landed in a place both personally and musically where she has made some decisions and settled herself into a more peaceful bed.

I’m not saying it’s entirely angst-free, but those of you who search out singer/songwriter types to get your angst on will not be disappointed. I guess I could try to compare her to another artist that you’ve already heard of, but I won’t. First of all, I personally find that to be bad music manners. (Stop asking musicians who they sound like — stop today!)

New Roman Times conquers New World

Austin-by-way-of-Orlando’s New Roman Times were on their best game this past Saturday, April 18, at New World Brewery as they celebrated the release of their full-length, On The Sleeve, on New Granada Records. Frequently compared with indie greats like The Pixies, Versus and Sonic Youth, NRT successfully fuses quality songwriting with dance-worthy guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll.

CL Sessions #7: Jim Morey Band

Leilani joins Stephen and Joran in the studio to welcome Jim Morey and his band as they perform two tracks live and talk about their strange brand of Neo-ragtime, NOLA jazz, stumblin’ roots rock.

Yes, they brought in a monkey, and yes, we got it on video.

Legatto Staccato “Lemonjello’s Birthday” (Download)

Improvisational collective Legatto Staccato has released an exclusive new track entitled “Lemonjello’s Birthday” recorded sometime last year at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa.

This recording is an excerpt from a half-hour session the band recorded using drums, bass, guitar, saxophone, percussion and various analog sound effects (including assorted balloons and toys). No word yet on whether the entire session will be released, but it’s likely. No word yet if this means more performances from the group, but keep checking their site and this blog for updates.

CL Sessions #6: Soulfound

It was a long time coming for session number six, but well worth it, as Clearwater-based hard rockers Soulfound join Joran and Stephen in the studio to talk about playing locally and nationally, recording and playing together for a decade and their decision to go on hiatus. They also bring their amps and put them to good use. MP3s of Temper Temper, Occupation and Looking For Me can be downloaded below the jump, along with pics.

Second Annual St. Pete Noise Fest

I’ve got some pretty varied taste in music and I’m usually pretty open to the sort of sonics other people tend to find abrasive, or abnormal, or just plain out there. I like music that feels like it could fall apart at any minute, that’s absurd or ironic, that’s too smart for its own good. I like music that sounds like it comes from outerspace, music with noises I can’t describe in simple text (though they’re a bitch to write about), and I’m especially drawn to novelty as long as it’s backed up by brilliance and not some sort of artificial play at it. I like dissonance and cacophony, especially when the band that brandishes it knows what they’re doing.

But I’ll be the first to admit that I’m just not a fan of Noise, nor do I think I really even get it. I mean, any genre of music that, by definition, means a loud, harsh, confused, discordant sound or group of sounds, just doesn’t sound appealing to me. And I’ve yet to find a self-described noise band that’s done anything other than turn me off.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t something redeeming about it, to someone. Which brings me to the real reason for this post: St. Pete International Noise Fest 2. (Organizers sent the press release to me too late for inclusion in the paper, but on time enough to make it to this blog.)

The free, BYOB outdoor fest features 13 bands with such memorably awful and amusing names as Insecticide Lobotomy, Grand Hotel Abyss, Black Beast of Arrrghhh, The Uh…, The Fuckin Faggots (pictured above, if you couldn’t tell by the sign boobtube being used as a sign), Cozmonot 13, Aloonaluna, The Penetralia and Telepathik Friend. I’ve checked out a few, and they’re actually not half bad. More ambient noise and Dan Deacon-esque electro rather than harsh. Could be a fun time; I bet some of these guys have some crazy light rigs.

Sat., April 4, 6 p.m., Megavod, 11498 68th St., Largo, free admission.

Review (with tons of photos): Country legend Charlie Louvin

Charlie Louvin 3.27.09

It’s not every day we’re lucky enough to see a veritable folk legend at New World Brewery — especially not one with a career as illustrious as Country Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin. On Friday, Mr. Louvin and his band graced New World Brewery with a special performance. At 82, Mr. Louvin tours regularly, releases new records and continues to inspire a new generation of musicians. He effortlessly connects with an all-ages audience by weaving stories and running commentary in between songs in a manner that most musicians can’t even dream of pulling off. Most of us can only dream of being this cool at any point in our lives — let alone at 82.

Countdown to South by Southwest

I realized this morning that I only have three more nights in my own bed before I fly to Austin for the annual South by Southwest music conference.

I will be covering the event (the showcases, awards, conferences and parties) for CL and starting Friday night (if everything goes according to plan) you’ll be able to read my daily blog right here at Tampa Calling.

In true New Media Douchebag fashion, in addition to the blog, I’ll be Tweeting (@jorantampa, #sxsw) and shooting as much video as I can. So tweet up, bitches, cuz I’m going to be giving the play-by-play on everything from Quincy Jones‘ keynote speech to the PJ Harvey/John Parrish set at Stubb’s, not to mention David Yow’s set with The Dicks at the Austin Music Awards. You can be jealous now. Peep the whole schedule here

I’ll also be attending daytime conferences with names like “Bloggers are Now in Control” and “Social Networks for the Anti-Social.” Riveting stuff, I know. What’s more, I also scored a badge for the Interactive portion of the conference where I’ll get to attend workshops with the CEOs of companies like Opera and FriendFeed.

But I’m sure all you care about is me getting wasted with the dude from The Proclaimers or seeing pictures of Juliette Lewis. All in good time, my friends.

But seriously, if there’s something you’d like me to catch – leave a comment. And keep checking the blog for the daily updates starting Friday.

Deerhunter, Summerbirds in the Cellar and Giddy-up, Helicopter!’s final show tonight at Czar Bar

Ybor’s Czar bar is set to host a promising indie rock show tonight with Atlanta’s stellar Deerhunter headlining. Also on the bill are the highly underrated Orlando band Summerbirds in the Cellar and the final show for local faves Giddy-up, Helicopter!

Deerhunter was all over the best-of lists with 2008’s wonderful Microcastle – an often ambient, but gorgeous indie/post-rock album.

It’s a shame that Giddy-up Helicopter! is ending.  They just released an album (see the review here) and truly have an authentic style hard to come by in so many local bands.

Cope stages their official “coming out” show this Friday at Skipper’s

Cope w/Middle Rhythm Session
Fri., March 6, 8 p.m., Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa, $7

A solid jam-rock outfit that’s been gigging around the Bay area for the past several years, Cope has only recently found a lineup that fits. Now, they’re ready to get serious.

“We’ve finally reached a sound we’re proud of,” guitarist/vocalist Dennis Stadelman told me a few weeks ago when I sat down with him and his bass-playing brother Kenny to discuss their official “coming out” show this Friday.

The Stadelmans have the best sort of sibling rivalry, one that forces them to grow and mature as artists together or else run the risk of one or the other losing creative face. After more than 15 years of performing — they started their first band at ages 15 and 16, along with their 14-year-old cousin, guitarist Roger Pinkerton — they’ve gotten pretty good at complementing each other, experimenting with new ideas and sounds, and challenging each other to improve and evolve. Me and My Boyfriends at Pro Star Recording Studio on Friday, 2/27

If you missed our show at Ruth Eckerd Hall this past November, you’ve got one more chance to see a little lesbian folkie like me rock the hell out with my five piece balls-to-the-wall rock n’ roll band, My Boyfriends. We’re playing Pro Star Recording Studio on Friday, 2/27 at 8pm.

Here are 5 reasons why you (yes, I mean *YOU*) should totally be there:

1) My Boyfriends are really talented musicians. Here’s a link to a blog I posted a few months back introducing them to the world and listing their accomplishments.

2) My Boyfriends play my songs how they are meant to be played. Not to denigrate the work I do as a solo artist, but my songs are really meant to be accompanied by more chest hair, back beat and low end than a single scrawny chick with an acoustic guitar can provide. My Boyfriends supply bountiful quantities of all of these things.    Read the rest of this entry »

Get to Know Your Local Mutants, Volume 3: Danny McGuire

Danny McGuire
Polk City is damn far from Tampa and it’s further from St Petersburg. Somehow, the only person I know who lives in Polk City, Danny McGuire, makes it to more shows in the Tampa/Orlando metropolitan area than anyone who lives in either town. Whether playing shows in any of his many bands, hawking genres for beer, or just attending and documenting with a little digital camera, Danny gets around. His main vehicle, the weirdo rock Pixies meets Ween juxtaposed by some Nirvana/Butthole Surfers action, Waterdigger, hasn’t played a show in a while because of drunk drama between the members. Volatile and out-of-control (rumor has it they’re banned from the New World Brewery), Waterdigger remains the only band that covered “Sweet Home Alabama” and turned it into a song I liked.

It’s not like McGuire sits around and waits for his mates to stop hating each other and get together — he just plays his songs in one of his five or 10 other bands. Improv crap guitar noisemakers turned repetative songsters (and usually still both), Thee Heidlecrumbs shock as much as they entertain.

Reworked Waterdigger songs, cosmic freak outs and other sounds comprise their latest sets. This band’s main other contributing member, Kat(hleen) Magyar, embodies an inspiring punk aesthetic — the confidence to play in front of people without any formal training and very little (but growing amounts of) experience. Their music should make school-learned musicians hang up their flutes and take up accounting. Insulting, hilarious songs about your granny and mother mixed with heartfelt introspection and anger explode out of McGuire’s unusual brain.

Bands named after other bands’ songs

In response to Leilani’s “Top 10 Stupid Band Names,” I’d like to point out that, yes, not only are some band names stupid, or bad - sometimes they’re downright stolen.

We’ve all sat around stoned, drunk (even sober) and thought up – or accidentally stumbled upon - the next greatest band name EVER. There’s got to be a list of those names somewhere, right? I seem to remember someone saying, “We’ve got to write that one down!”

There are plenty of band names inspired by literate source material or that just make sense (Steely Dan, named after a dildo in William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch or The L.A. Guns and Hollywood Roses combining to form Guns and Roses). But to lift the name of your group straight out of another artist’s catalog instead of establishing a new identity for your sound, your band, your business? It’s like starting up a fast food chain and calling it “Big Mac’s.”

As my wife pointed out, the only time a tribute should be paid to a band’s song is when you’re actually paying tribute to that band – as is the case with “Paradise City: The Guns N Roses Tribute” or ”Strutter: The Ultimate Tribute to Kiss.”

Here’s my list of offenders (in order of offense taken):

Roppongi’s Ace CD release show

With temperatures in the 30’s, a steady stream filed into Ybor’s New World Brewery for the release of Tampa-based alternative-country band Roppongis Ace’s first CD, Into the Night.

The album was recorded this December at Steve Connonely’s Zen studios while Drummer Max Norton and Singer/Guitarist Alex Spoto were on break from college. Spoto says the title simply stemmed from what their recording experience included. “Not much sleep and we went into the night,” he said.

And last night’s performance had the crowd there into the night as well. Many of them have watched the band grow since they were in high school, playing small shows around town.

They were joined by Max’s older brother Jessie on bass and harmonica.

It would seem a salty blues man in his sixties has crawled into Spoto’s vocal chords and made a happy home there. Spoto wrote all the songs on the album, but noted how vital collaboration from the Norton Bros. was to making the sound a complete package.

A new addition to the band was Rebekah Pulley’s bassist, Rob Pastore holding down the steel pedal.

Right off the bat, Roppongi’s Ace had the crowd pumped, but when the speakers filled with a ‘thickfreakness‘ dense version of  ”So it goes”, it seemed that even the most modest of attendees took to stompin‘ without a moments thought. That included Norton and Spoto’s family, who can only beam with pride at the turnout and support for the young band’s talent. More below the jump: Read the rest of this entry »

Hammell on Trial at Skipper’s tonight! I hear the opener is amazing…

If you’ve never experienced the hurricane-force musical stylings and caustic lyrical wit of Ed Hammell (aka Hammell on Trial), tonight is your chance. This Righteous Babe artist and long-time Ani DiFranco collaborator will be blowing the roof off of Skipper’s Smokehouse (I know, there is no roof) with his one man theatrical show, The Terrorism of Everyday Life.

Even more signicant (for the purposes of this blog, at least) is the fact that I will be opening for him. That’s right, I’m the soup to Ed Hammell’s sandwich, so don’t be late!

The show starts at 8pm. For tickets and details, go to www.skipperssmokehouse.com.

Remember, it’s not everyday that a girl like me opens for some dude. You don’t wanna miss this!

Tampa tattoos bring tunes, too!

A happier Geri X returns, releases new CD

She appeared on the Bay area scene about four years ago, an exotically pretty, shy girl with an acoustic guitar and a mysterious name:

Geri X.

She had a nebulous backstory: A Bulgarian immigrant, it was said, with some kind of trauma in her childhood. Even her age was up for debate; rumors spread that she could be as young as 15 or as old as 30 (a very young-looking 30). She wouldn’t tell. Nor would she reveal much about her past. It was as if a talented kid had been dropped into the scene by a spaceship. She played countless local gigs and was amiable enough, but remained somehow remote.

And then she was gone, or mostly gone — relocated to Wisconsin with her new boyfriend and bassist/guitarist, Greg Roteik. She returned sporadically for gigs.

Now she’s back.

I Love St. Pete Art Show — surprise, good music!

I dropped into the I Love St. Pete Art Show this Saturday night, took a quick look-see at some pretty great St. Pete-inspired art – didn’t stay inside artPool too long as it was jam-packed and hotter than the dickens – and almost snagged a pair of retro sunglasses I spotted from across the room but actually talked myself out of buying by the time I could see myself in their reflective lenses. Had a chat with Bluelucy artists Chad Mize and Phillip Clark about their upcoming appearance in Manifest Hope: DC (a pre-Presidential Inauguration art show held January 17-19 in Washington D.C.), got a little dazzle from the graphics projected onto the flat top front of artPool’s facade, and was thoroughly impressed by a four-song set of live music by the Jim Morey Band performed in the gallery parking lot.

Jim Morey Band fuses vagabond jazz and muddy river Creole with that Tom Waits style of stumblin’, rootsy rock n’ roll, sly gypsy rhythms swaggering and swinging and stomping and grooving along. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekend in music

Friday, Jan. 09
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, one of two self-monikered jazz-funk ensembles led by West Coast flutist/saxophonist/vocalist Karl Denson, brings the dance party to State Theatre. The fun kicks off with Ft. Lauderdale jammers The Heavy Pets.

The multi-day Cigar City Tattoo Convention has filled the many floors of Ybor City’s Cuban Club in with all manner of diversions, including a packed bill of live music. Tonight, it’s alt-country ensemble Drag the River, a twangy project of punk-rockers Chad Price (singer and bassist of ALL) and Jon Snodgrass (former guitarist and singer of Armchair Martian). Support comes from San Francisco singer/songwriter/Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape. Orpheum hosts a Saturday evening Tattoo Convention After Party with locals Rude Squad, Surly, Party Time and The Redliners.

Skipper’s Smokehouse presents 95-year-old boogie blues pianist/vocalist Pinetop Perkins, who’s backed by guitarist Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin and his band. Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues open.

Linda Eder (a pop vocalist who jump-started her career on Star Search) plays Ruth Eckerd Hall with pianist William Joseph.

Also playing this Friday night: Have Gun, Will Travel at Uptown Bar in St. Petersburg; Villanova Junction with Kore and Jett at The Garage Bar in St. Petersburg; Life of Pi with Military Junior, Blast and the Detergents, and Steady State at New World Brewery.

Saturday, Jan. 10
Music day two of the Cigar City Tattoo Convention features North Carolina rockabilly troubadour Unknown Hinson (aka Stuart Daniel Baker, pictured), a freaky solo artist who offers a sort of onstage B-horror-movie shtick; Red Rocket Deluxe provides support. Read the rest of this entry »

Hankshaw & Friends

The annual New Granada Christmas Show at New World Brewery featuring King of Spain, Davey von Bohlen, Hankshaw and Jarvik 7 was a splendid night of reunions with a grand soundtrack.  The show has a reputation for unique elements (including in past years the reunions of Scrog, Pohgoh and appearances by elusive bands like The Blackwoods Orchestra) and it’s a place to meet up with friends from near and far.

Gabe’s concert photo highlights of 2008

In 2008, I tried to take pictures at almost every show I attended. It’s a daunting task. Sometimes the lighting sucks, you may get stuck far from the stage or some venues may not let you bring a camera in at all. But when all goes right, you can go home with some swell shots of the bands.

Manchester Orchestra at Orpheum (pictures)

Last night, Manchester Orchestra sold out the Orpheum (this reporter only made it in thanks to the door work of CL Marketing + Promotions Director Joran Oppelt). Lead singer Andy Hull (looking every bit Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle’s little brother) impressed with his vocal chops, mixing in a good deal of Ben Gibbard-influence to go with the band’s loud/quiet sing-a-long numbers, some which have been featured in the Gossip Girl TV show.
