As an addendum to my recent column, “Traveling to see music without losing your money (or your mind),” I’ve put together this small group of shows and fests that provide some good selections for music-motivated travel. If you haven’t already made travel plans this summer, here are some of your best bets.
Grizzly Bear and TV on the Radio Saturday, June 13, The Tabernacle, Atlanta
If you wanna go, get your tickets now — it’s a Saturday night co-headlining bill featuring of two of Brooklyn’s most hip and beloved bands, both with recent albums — Grizzly’s just-released Veckatimest, TVOTR’s fantastic Dear Science from last year — so the show will most definitely sell out. I would be at this show, front row, if I wasn’t just returning from a music-motivated vacation that same Thursday.
The Decemberists (pictured) with Andrew Bird and Blind Pilot July 18-19, Edgefield, Portland, Oregon
The chamber rock quintet only comes as close as Atlanta and plays that date on Wednesday, June 3 — not at all convenient for a road trip unless you plan on taking that week off. But the tour also includes this appealing Saturday-Sunday run in Portland, and with whistling singer/songwriter Andrew Bird, and Portland’s own indie pop duo, Blind Pilot. Deerhunter plays at Czar to packed house. Photo by MatthewParke
With arrival of folksy revivalists like Iron and Wine, Devendra Banhart and Bon Iver, it would seem that the charge of the minimal guitar is relentless. Deerhunter is proving wrong those that believe loud guitars are on the fritz. An ambient, post-punk band with a scotch of garage finesse took over Czar’s stage late Monday night.
Their album is tame compared the show the audience received that night. Ambient garage punk with melody, and it was loud. Whenever drummer Moses Archuleta hit bass drum on his set, the whole audience felt its thud. “Is this amp too loud? Is my guitar to loud?” asked vocalist, guitarist and band front man Branford Cox. Halfway through the set, Moses had busted through his bass drum. Opening band Summerbirds in the Cellar’s bass drum fearfully took its place. Read the rest of this entry »
Friday night saw the return of Diplo — the DJ also known as Thomas Wesley Printz — to Ybor’s Czar Bar. Friday nights at Czar are better known as Pulp the Party, an electro hip-hop dance party hosted by the Orlando-based DJ Pauly Crush. It’s a quite the scene, though not your typical Ybor douchebag nightclub. Czar Bar has some style and every 30 minutes or so, it’s open bar. When you hear a horn and see the yellow sirens going off above the bar, it’s drink time on them.
Diplo — who spent time at UCF and had the unfortunate duty of dating M.I.A. for awhile — took the stage just after 1 a.m. His more than two-hour set had the packed dancefloor in a non-stop, booty-shaking throw down. Only a few cuts from Top Ranking , his ‘08 release that prominently featured Santigold, were played. Highlights from the night were a remix of the Beastie Boys’ “So Watcha Want,” a tease of the melody from Santigold’s killer track, “Creator,” and a remix of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes.”
Ybor’s Czar bar is set to host a promising indie rock show tonight with Atlanta’s stellar Deerhunter headlining. Also on the bill are the highly underrated Orlando band Summerbirds in the Cellar and the final show for local faves Giddy-up, Helicopter!
Deerhunter was all over the best-of lists with 2008’s wonderful Microcastle – an often ambient, but gorgeous indie/post-rock album.
It’s a shame that Giddy-up Helicopter! is ending. They just released an album (see the review here) and truly have an authentic style hard to come by in so many local bands.

Contrary to the band’s site, which has them in Europe through March 10, Deerhunter is, indeed, coming to Tampa. The date is March 9. The venue is Crowbar TBA. No openers as of yet, but expect more info on the aes presents website in the upcoming weeks.
For your Friday viewing pleasure, here’s a vid of the title track off the band’s latest album, Microcastle.
