Paul McCartney, Wilco and Feist on Letterman (video)

Here’s a video 1-2 punch that’s tough to beat.

Tuesday night, Wilco appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, with special guest vocalist Feist, to perform “You And I.”

The next day, 66-year-old ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his band played a 22-minute concert on the roof of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater. They flew through “Coming Up,” “Band on the Run,” “Let Me Roll It,” “Helter Skelter,” and “Back in the USSR,” and sounded tight as f!@#, in this author’s opinion.

Coachella 2009: Cohen and McCartney? Yes. M.I.A.? Not so much

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival observed its 10th birthday earlier this month. The 3-day weekend event, held in the Palm Springs desert each spring, is generally considered (along with Bonnaroo in suburban Nashville) the preeminent music festival in the country.

The festival’s domain has been indie and dance music, but in recent years heavyweights like Roger Waters, Prince, and this year, Paul McCartney, have provided heft to the lineup, as well as some controversy.

But the 66-year-old McCartney wasn’t even the oldest performer on the bill this year. That would be 74-year-old Leonard Cohen, who played right before McCartney on the festival’s opening night. Read the rest of this entry »

Paul McCartney “Sing the Changes”

Macca’s latest album under the Fireman moniker, Electric Arguments, finds him dabbling in a variety of musical styles, the result being one of his most satisfying releases. Check out the video for the single “Sing the Changes.”

Billboard’s 50-year chart overview

Billboard magazine, long the music industry bible, celebrated the 50-year anniversary of its Hot 100 singles chart not too long ago, and issued a compilation of the top songs and artists of the last half-century. I’m not even that much of a chart hound and I got lost in the lists for quite awhile. Billboard’s Hot 100 is based on actual sales and airplay, and therefore has been an accurate historical gauge for what’s really been popular in music over the years. Peruse the 50-year charts here.

Here’s a quick quiz before you go browsing:

1. One man (who was a member of two bands) is in the Top 11 artists. Who is it?

2. Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson both made the Top 10 artists. Which one placed higher?

3. What contemporary hard-rock band placed highest on the Hot 100 list?

4. Who placed more solo songs on the Hot 100, Paul McCartney or John Lennon?

McCartney’s eclectic Electric

Paul McCartney’s late-career renaissance may have hit another high point. Though his new disc doesn’t drop until Nov. 25, you can head over to National Public Radio’s website and listen to the exclusive streaming of Electric Arguments, the third collaboration between McCartney and Youth under “The Fireman” moniker.

While their previous two releases were rooted in trance, Electric has the duo more fully exploring McCartney’s chameleon-like tendencies, finding compelling artistic expression in a wide range of musical styles. From the heavy, bluesy “Nothing Too Much Just Out of Sight” and “Highway” to the spacey tranquility of “Is This Love?” and “Lifelong Passion,” McCartney and Youth create arresting, at times surreal soundscapes that are mesmerizing for their complexity. It’s an astounding effort that never sounds forced or as if McCartney is just dabbling or indulging in his eccentric side.

Happy Birthday, Paul McCartney

I can’t believe I missed this til now, being the devoted Macca fan that I am, but Sir Paul McCartney turned 66 today. On June 14, he played before over 350,000 fans in Independence Square in Kiev. One of the show’s highlights was undoubtedly “Mrs. Vandebilt,” (off Band on the Run) which was the top song requested by fans at a Ukrainian website. It also happens to be one of my favorite songs off the album, particularly for its cheeky refrain “What’s the use of worrying/ What’s the use of hurrying/ What’s the use of anything?” Check out the stellar performance for yourself.
