Pondering Polo
March 23rd, 2007 by max linsky in Sports
The Bradenton Herald — which by my count has been scooping the HT a lot recently — has a short story today about Sarasota Polo, a preview piece setting the scene for this Sunday’s match. Tailgating’s big apparently, and the story makes the point that a day at the matches — or should I say “the game of kings” — isn’t as formal as you’d think.
Still, the “story” is all of 500 words and a classic inverted pyramid (last line: Riders from SMART do demonstrations and routines on horseback during one regular-season polo match each year, Payne said) and I finished with more questions than I started with. Who goes to these things? Who becomes a pro polo player? Why aren’t the matches more formal — isn’t that the fun? What’ll happen if I Richard Gere-out and bring a gerbil hooker?
It seems sort of perfect that polo’s alive and well here. I just want to know what the heck it’s all about. If only I knew the editor of a local newspaper…
