+ These links come with a heavy heart today. I’m not sure how I missed the news, but I realized this morning that local instrumental folk artist Sal DiTroia died on June 22. Sal got his start as a session musician for Simon & Garfunkel, childhood friends of his, and became an in-demand, go-to strummer for countless famous acts, among them Janis Ian and Barbara Streisand. I interviewed Sal in late 2005, as he had settled into a career doing home recordings for TV programs (in particular, WB shows) and performing his own wordless compositions around Southwest Florida. If you never saw him, you missed out. Sal was amazingly dexterous with a guitar, his fingers moving up and down the instrument with a rare speed and acuity. Sal will be missed. Tonight, head over to Metro Coffee & Wine, where Sal regularly gigged, for a tribute. Metro will be spinning classics from his extensive discography. [salditroia, myspace]
