Underappreciated Video Friday: Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan

August 24th, 2007 by Cooper Levey-Baker in Arts, Music, News

This week’s underappreciated video is a sneak-peek excerpt from Todd Haynes‘ hotly anticipated Bob Dylan avant-bio, I’m Not There. (You can catch a teaser trailer here.) Rather than follow the tried ‘n’ true rock bio clichés of movies like Ray and Walk the Line, Haynes actually cast a wide swath of actors in the Dylan role, with some logical ones (Christian Bale, Heath Ledger) and some not-so-logical ones, like a young black kid (Marcus Carl Franklin) and a woman (Cate Blanchett). The clip below is a snippet of Blanchett as Dylan, and features a brief turn by comedian David Cross as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. As weird as the film sounds, this segment seems fairly straightforward coming from Haynes — who did, after all, shoot an entire biography of Karen Carpenter using dolls.

The fact that Beyonce supposedly declined Haynes’ invitation to participate in the Dylan project obviously ranked among my top five disappointments of 2006.

Oh, and while I’m on the subject (sorry, Haynes happens to be one of my fave directors), here’s a link to the Karen Carpenter biopic w/Barbies. See it while you can…

    Yay, illegal art!

Beyoncé would have been rad, although I suspect Alicia Keys may have been more appropriate, considering Dylan’s homage to her on his last disc.

Forgot to mention another reason why “I’m Not There” could be great, and that’s Haynes’ music background. He directed a killer clip for Sonic Youth’s “Disappearer” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MySZtE3F-4Y&mode=related&search=)
