See & Do: Weekend Edition
May 2nd, 2008 by Amanda Schurr in Arts, Food and Drink, Music, See & Do“Just got paid, Friday night, party hoppin’, feelin’ right…”
With that lame 80’s Johnny Kemp song quote out of the way (later redone by N’Sync - hey-o! Double lame!), if you’re ready to spiff up (or not) and head out, whatcha gonna do? Here are a few options…
Jazz Juvenocracy CD release party for “Strange Noises are Coming From Those Kids Over There”
Fri., May 2nd, 8:00 p.m. at Glenridge Performing Arts Center (7333 Scotland Way, Sarasota, 552-5325), Tix are $5.
These kids are great - enthusiastic, talented, driven and did I mention super stoked to be playing music? Six local players with an average age of “14.3,” they tear into everything from Duke Ellington to The Commodores, but I think they really had me at Tower of Power. They’ll likely charm the pants off of you, too.
I’m informed that all proceeds go toward the band members’ ongoing musical education, and “not the latest video game, no matter how much they whine.” If you can’t catch ‘em tonight, they’ll be at The Bungalow (301 S. Pineapple Ave., Sarasota, 365-4430) tomorrow beginning at 7 p.m.
13th Annual Cinco de Mayo Block Party - Sat., May 3 at Two Senoritas (1355 Main St., Sarasota, 366-1618)
Holy jeez, does this town - nay, this country - need another excuse to drink? So be it… The festivities occur around downtown’s Two Senoritas - aka Dos Ho’s or Dos Bitches to locals. With any luck, they’ll resurrect the gorgefest of their taco-eating contest, which is pretty freakin’ fun to watch, especially the moment that poor schmuck starts to slow down, wretches his neck sideways, gasps for breath and dons his best/worst “Oh my God, I’m gonna puke” face. We’re at least promised live music and “dancing in the street.” Probably by folks who’ve had one too many shots o’ Cuervo. When in Tijuana…
This is fantastic people watching, no doubt, but I’m just going for the special appearance by Paco the Mini Donkey.
“Organized MAYhem” - The Bradentucky Bombers vs. The Jacksonville Rollergirls - Sun., May 4, 6 p.m. at Florida Wheels (3611 Third St. W., Bradenton, 747-8602), Tix are $12.
Babes, brawls, and (free) beer. Really, it never gets old. Never. Support our local roller derby dames on their home turf. ‘Nuff said.
Have a good one.
